Dave, what about if you skip the step:
    setenv KERNEL_CONFIG GENERIC
I don't know what effect using this has, but without it build should
work fine.

As I said, I have tried all the tricks I know.  But one
common method I tried is like so:

(trying to build a sandbox named 'gold')

mksb -undo gold
mksb -back goldos.nightly gold
workon -sb gold
mkdir kernel
cd kernel
setenv KERNEL_CONFIG GENERIC
build

This does not work.  I have also tried using mklinks before building,
and using sbpop before building (this is a tool provided by Ric Werme
that speeds up the process enormously - yes, this means it fails much
faster!).

I have tried rebooting my local workstation and doing all the odemounts
by hand.  I have tried rebooting and odemount -all.  I have tried creating
a sandbox on wasted, and mounting a partition from my local workstation
onto wasted and building while on wasted into my local partition.
