Jim,

ODE will run equally fine on 1.2 or 1.3 or 2.0 or 3.0, any BL. I don't know
what happened that you concluded:
I found out recently that I cannot use ODE with my factory installed
    version 1.2 of OSF/1. I need to update I am told to OSF/1 BL8.

There are issues, however, about what operating system can be used to
build which version of the product. 1.2 or 1.3 can build 1.2 or 1.3; 2.0
can build 2.0 or 3.0.

Regarding setup, mount /usr/sde from the most appropriate server as
listed in /usr/sde/disks/ode.servers (you can look on a production machine
for this file.) Unfortunately, there is no violet net server yet; we were
hoping to add guru, but not yet. So just take your best pick.

Do do setup, on an alpha, run, as root, on your system:

	# /usr/sde/install/ode install
and answer the questions (you're a client). you can choose to do the
odemount setup via this interface or just do them by hand, i.e.
	# /usr/sde/odemount agosminor agosminor.nightly (for example)

Subject: PATH MTU Development - ODE Net Environment Logic Check
Date: Tue, 11 Jan 94 11:14:26 -0500
From: bound
X-Mts: smtp

Greg,

I am sending this to you as I am ready to begin building PATH MTU on
OSF/1 and need to do a logic check with you regarding my administrative
environment within USG for ODE. Just trying to get started.

For recap the node I am using is ipng (16.140.144.110) off the violet
sub-network. ipng is an Alpha Pelican.

Getting the right OSF/1 OS to do Development:
I found out recently that I cannot use ODE with my factory installed
version 1.2 of OSF/1. I need to update I am told to OSF/1 BL8.
I set up ris on osfris machine for a remote install of T2.0-BL8 OSF/1.
When I did the setld from ipng I received permission denied. Are my
permissions right for access or was this a quirk? Is this the best
place to get BL8?

Building my Sandbox on ipng:
I will do a client installation of ODE and assume my ODE server is
osfris machine. Can you verify that I have the proper source pool
access privileges on osfris and add me to the access control list (ACL)
for the source pool?

What ODE Path Should I use:
To mount the ODE tools and source pool? I am assuming /usr/sde and want
to use agosminor.

Once I figure out the above I will contact Carol Rivard to get a
Kerberos password for Principal Name Jim_Bound, and begin setting up my
csh environment, sandbox, etc.

Comment on ris user interface:
When setting up ris on ULTRIX or OSF/1 (osfris) when presented with the
software kit options menu to remote install the screen scrolls past so
fast you loose the beginning entries to view. Its so fast you cannot
even ctrl-S to stop it in time. Not good.

thanks
/jim

Josh,

Thanks for the pointers. I want to work with agosminor which is stable
and has our latest Multicast enhancements in it for IP. I was told I
needed to use BL8 agosminor (sterling) to get that code, and that I needed
to be running OSF 2.0 to build with agosminor BL8. Thats why I made the
comment. But as you pointed out it was a one-to-one correspondence 1.2 to 1.2
or 2.0 to 2.0. Sorry for this miscommunications my fault with early
interpretation.

Based on the above am I on the right track?

I had gotten the ode install to work and the mount too (as client off of
osfris. Then I backed off because my system was 1.2 per what someone had
told me. The best I could figure was I would not be able to checkout or
build per my OS version and then I realized I needed to make sure my
ACLs and Kpasswd environment was set up.

Any way I appreciate this response and bearing with the pain of my
neophyte ODE learning curve. Its important I get this all correct as I
learn it. I have been through the tutorials and presentations and once
I get my admin environment correct I am sure I will be OK using ODE.

thanks a lot,
/jim

Jim,

From what I understand you can build anything, 1.2, 1.3, 2.0 or 3.0
from a 1.2 system or a 1.3 system. (2.0 is sterling = agosminor)
(see attached mail from Grant)

Anyway, it looks like you're on the right track. Certainly it's ok
to be running sterling bl8; you'll want to upgrade to the final
sterling SSB after it's completed (mid-end of Feb).

FYI, for help doing builds, mail to "buildhelp", for help with ode
commands and environment, mail to "odehelp". You can see the file
/usr/sde/HELP.info for details on this and more...

I don't believe this is true, you should be able to build any stream with 1.2
or 1.3
