I'm not sure where your notion of "traditional" comes from, there are
so many different heritages....

I think the answer to your question is to use "mklinks ../obj/alpha/kernel"
to avoid rebuilding the BINARY .o files.  The kernel Makefile produced
by config will not go into the backing tree looking for object files.

Once your sandbox is established, you might want to stick to the
build actions of:
	BINARY_config
	BINARY_depend
and	BINARY_vmunix
(or add whatever you wish in place of BINARY).
