Subj: building a .so from a .a?

I'd like to build a new shared library in my sterling sandbox. I cloned
the Makefile for -ltli (which seemed fairly simple, yet has both .a and
.so outputs), but I don't know how to get more than just the traditional
.a library.

help?

The libtli Makefile is a BAD EXAMPLE. We're currently trying to convince
the maintainer to do it properly.

So, do you have a good example somewhere?
