880.0. "Eliminator of non-printable characters" by IJSAPL::KLERK (Theo de Klerk) Thu Sep 03 1987 20:00

  A request:

Would it be useful for the tag translator to eliminate any non-printable
character (and issue a warning)? I have had a few characters around here
that liked to keep the down arrow key pressed while scanning an SDML file.
Thast seemed to introduce some <ESC>[A and [B's in the file. The Tag
translator did not complain (obviously), but TeX does (obviously).

I would appreciate a feature that would warn me about these things and
eliminate them. The mention of %TEX-blahblah .. error around line 450
is not of immediate help as it refers to line 450 of the TeX file -
not something to be understandable to simple users...

Opinions appreciated,

Theo

Building something such as this into the tag translator could cause
trouble. First of all, all of the tag defns contain non-printing
characters that are filtered during the post-translate stage. (<ctrl/t>
beomes \) Also, I have applications which require that I be able to
send non-printing characters through the tag translator. I've had
    enough trouble ducking the post-translator.

A rather simple tpu or scan procedure could be written as an
independent tool for users who have this problem with their keyboards
    or software.

BTW, I've heard of that problem of the stray text appear in a file,
but I've not been able to reproduce it. Did it occur with edt or
    some other editor?

I get stray text in my files all the time because there is a noisy
line somewhere between my terminal and VAXUUM across the hall.
If I hold down any key it will deposit some junk. Here's a sample:
    MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM[[CMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
I wrote a row of M's and then ran the cursor back and forth across
it until the junk appeared in the middle. Some days when I log
in the line to VAXUUM is fine.

My little diesel truck is burning a quart of oil every 800 miles,
and my right knee complains now and then from overuse...

    Things wear out.

What represents a stuck key to you could be, for another writer, an
expression of delight after eating a chocolate chip cookie (note
the polite hiccough near the middle).

I get odd characters in my files, too -- usually it is a
semicolon(;) or an equal sign (=). This happens when I
am using EDT, and only when I'm DECnetting to VAXUUM from
my VAXstation II/RC. (The old VT100 is fine.) It happens
when I'm using ANY arrow key: up, down, sideways, whatever.
I have learned to go slowly, as it seems to happen when
I hold the arrow keys down.
880.5EDT arrow keys are trouble makersIJSAPL::KLERKTheo de KlerkSat Sep 05 1987 17:4411
 Re .1:

As the other replies already suggest, it is the EDT editor that
usually causes the problem and almost always it's the arrow keys
(any which way) inserting <esc>[A-D . The errors are mostly
created by people who know the command EDIT/EDT but never bothered
    learning the keypad functions...

The workaround small program is indeed what I made myself.

880.6spurious characters with EVE, tooDECWET::HUNTLiz HuntTue Sep 08 1987 20:517
    re: .5

I'm using EVEplus and the EDT keypad emulator on EVE and I still
get spurious equal signs (=) when I use the up and down arrows,
no matter what the speed. The problem occurred more frequently
with EDT, but I do still get some of the same behavior with EVE
    editors.
