870.0. "VAXstation Preview?" by TOPDOC::STANTON (I got a gal in Kalamazoo) Wed Sep 02 1987 10:16

    I did a few searches & got nowhere so I'll ask here. What
    is the status, if any, of a VAXstation previewer for DOC-
    UMENT's .dvi files? Flavio Rose had one a while ago & I'm
    curious to know if it still exists.

         Well, there is a couple of DVI previewers around but they
         don't have raster versions of the fonts Document uses.
         The previewer project has been put on the back burner
         until we see what the Adobe Postscript Previewer is giving
         us. Hopefully, it won't be a black box, but we may be
         able to use that to somehow present DVI files -- but thats
         not for certain yet.

         There was a discussion about the workstation tools that
         CUP Engineering is working on, see note 177.6

    I just tried Flavio's DVI2VWS (-12) with DOCUMENT --- it works!

    You'll have to

    	$ DEF TEX$FONTS DOC$LN03_FONTS
    	$ DEF TEX$LN03DIR DOC$LN03_FONTS

    and call DVI2VWS with a file.DVI_LN03, of course after running DOCUMENT
    with /KEEP=DVI to protect this file from being deleted.

    Try and enjoy...

         Thank you very much! I looked at flavio's previewer many
         moons ago, but the raster fonts that I got for the previewer
         didn't have the correct fonts for document. At the time
         I didn't realize that DVI2VWS used the LN03 font data
         raw. I assumed it took specialized raster screen fonts.
         Its kinda rough about the edges, but it does the trick.

    Any pointers to where Flavio keeps the software?

 If we're talking about the same previewer as LaTeX (I think we do ), you
 can copy it from our node:
    IJSAPL::TEXDISK:[TEX.VWS]*.*
 It contains object files, a link file and a MEM to read.
