789.0. "Tables Within Tables?" by RDGENG::SIM () Tue Aug 11 1987 07:59

    I am trying to put a table within a table, but so far without
    success! I am writing a leader's guide for a course, and this
    is what I'm trying to do:

    Main table is used for giving instructions to leader ie

    duration       What to do                          Notes

    5m Discuss the meaning of life Use
                   and write answers on flipchart FLIPCHART

    I then want to insert another table to get the following effect:

    10m The answers you can expect are:

                  CONTRACTS     SERVICES      SOFTWARE

                  Yes           No            No
                  In some cases No            Yes

    Am I trying to achieve the impossible? At present Document
    keeps telling me that the "table within a table' is too wide
    however small I make the columns.

    Hope I have made myself clear

789.1meanings within meaningsVAXUUM::KOHLBRENNERTue Aug 11 1987 12:086
    A table within a table should be no problem. We probably need
    to see the source to figure out what is wrong.

    (Only five minutes to discuss the meaning of life?) ;-)

789.2Sounds like character overcountingCOOKIE::JOHNSTONTue Aug 11 1987 14:2412
Without seeing the code, I don't know if your problem is similar to one
that I had; but it sounds like it is.

DOCUMENT is overcounting the number of characters in the second table;
adding them to the characters in the first table rather than "replacing"
them with the new count of characters.

Note 662 explains the problem and Patti explains the fix.

789.3Bug; same as 662CLOSET::ANKLAMTue Aug 11 1987 14:308

    Rose beat me to it; yes 662.1 explains a workaround for this bug.
    Note that all it does is to get around the tag translator's E-level
    message. The text processor may shift to the smaller font if you
    don't leave enough width for the inner column.

    Thanks, everyone, my table printed out quite happily this morning
    after I tried your solution.
