766.0. "Grouping things on a single page" by TREK::WATERS (Lester Waters) Thu Aug 06 1987 11:16
How can I group blocks of text together? In RUNOFF, one could use
the .TESTPAGE function, but this has the drawback that you need
to know how many lines you needed ahead of time. Lets say I wanted
two or three paragraphs to occur on the same page, and if they didn't,
then they would be pushed to the next page.
Functions like <FIGURE...> let you associate some text with a figure,
but that is not the only thing that I want. What if I had two
paragraphs that I wanted to keep on the same page with two figures?
Or I have a table which I would like on the same page as a figure?
What I am proposing is a <GROUP> and <ENDGROUP> tag set. Simply
put, the formatter would try to keep anything found within these
tags on the same page. If the whole group didn't fit on a single
page, a warning (not fatal!) message would be issued and the group
would be started on a new page and broken at the end of the page
(and wrapped to a new page).
There is a <KEEP> tag for a single line of text, but not for a block
of text/figures/tables/etc.
Any feedback on this idea?
