   I am trying to make a master index and have stumlbed upon two problems
   with DOCUMENT V1.0. The first seems to be a documentation problem.
   Section 7.3.3 (page 7-13) of the V1.0 User Manual, volume 1 claims
   making a master index is a two step process. Step one should be this
   command:
   
   	$ DOC MASTER.INX_LIST REPORT LN03/MASTER
   
   If you don't use "/INDEX=OVER" on that line then no index entries
   come out (I know, that's what I did on the individual files because
   I want all index entries used but the example should mention this
   I think).
   
   Step two is to run the resultant .TEX file through DOCUMENT again
   with:
   
   	$ DOC/NOTAG MASTER.TEX REPORT LN03
   
   This blows up with "unknown escape sequences". This error is the
   one I am having trouble with. Anybody know what it means? A sample
   session is included below with the exact messages.

    I can help with at least the first part of your problem.  
    You don't need the /INDEX=OVERRIDE_MASTER qualifier to make a master
    index *if* the <x> and <y> tags in your book are coded with the
    MASTER keyword.
    
    If the <X> and <Y> tags aren't coded with MASTER, VAX DOCUMENT assumes
    you want them only in the local index and doesn't put hits in for
    them in the master index.
    
    Using /INDEX=override with /MASTER puts all your index hits, both
    those coded with MASTER and those without it, in the master index.
    
    The interaction of /MASTER with /INDEX does need to be better
    documented and will be for the next version...

    I hate to be a bother but does anyone have any ideas about the Tex
    errors I posted at the end of .0?
    
    The funny thing is that a .TEX file is produced which when processed
    separately does seem to product a correct master index. Perhaps
    the Tex errors are just warnings or something (like the overfull
    stuff)?

    RE .2 and .0  Are you saying  that if you take the DVI_LN03 file
    which is produced *by* the run which generated the TeX errors, and
    run it through the device converted, that you get a master index which 
    is correct?  If this is not what you mean, please let us know. 
    
    Is it possible that this master index was processed on V10, from
    files which were originally processed on BL8?  We had a similar
    bug within the group, and when the person reprocessed his book
    on V10 from scratch, the messages went away.  If you did migrate
    across baselevels while you were doing this book, please try doing
    it from scratch on V10.
    
    Also, please send me the TEX file which produced the errors, and
    a thorough explanation of how to reproduce what you were doing.
    I will post a note here as soon as this phenomenon is explained.

    This is a known bug. See the DOC010.RELEASE_NOTES, item 1.7
    on page 10. The correct workaround was, indeed, to process the
    file through the device converter.
