In trying to shift the title of a document to a position where it can
be seen through a pre-punched window in a cover, I'm interested to know
what exactly the \block macro does. I know the <line> expands to
\block{1} , so what does \block{8} do?

Ok, so I found out shortly afterwards (it's mostly like that: you give
up and then you find it)
\block{n} re-defines the current left edge of the printed text to start
at the n-th block indent, as defined by \blockindent. Effectively, it
shifts the left margin of the text. Quite useful!
