693.0. "Is V1 available?" by CADSYS::MCDONOUGH () Mon Jul 20 1987 13:43

	Six weeks ago, our group decided to stick with BL7 until V1 was
	available, foregoing the improvements in BL8 for what we
	understood would be a short time. When I asked a few weeks back,
	I was told that V1 would be available in "mid-July".

	Is V1 available?

	Thanks for any info.

693.1They're there ... I think.MARCUS::SKEELICO 269 - 2182Mon Jul 20 1987 23:219
    I know the documentation is (thanks, Randy, for all the help!) --
    but the last time I looked (around 5:30 today) the subdirectory
    with the BL9 (v1.0) savesets was protected from world access. Hmmm...

    BTW: does anyone know whether I can ignore the LN03 savesets if
    all I intend to use is my LN03R (postscript) printer?

    Any and all advice appreciated!-marcus.

    Yes, you can ignore LN03 support. The PostScript mode of the LN03R
    SCRIPTPRINTER is handled by the POSTSCRIPT destination in VAX DOCUMENT.

    (You can, of course, print LN03 files on it as well -- but LN03
    fonts are extra-cost royalty items, so you probably won't want to
    spend the money if you don't need them.)

693.4It's probably too soonIJSAPL::KLERKTheo de KlerkWed Jul 22 1987 03:5218
 Judging by reactions of some customers, who received Document output
 (specifications and such), it may be too soon for the European market
 if the following items are not met:

    - <language> sensitive
    - proper hyphenation. I've seen some dutch lines hyphenated which
      are really looking weird. Ragged right printing is the only
      alternative, but it is not really an acceptable alternative.

 I hope as much as possible is done on this to make Document truely
 acceptable.

 (in LaTeX I recompiled the LPLAIN.TEX using a modified german hyphenation
 pattern, which is more like ours than the english one - if we can get
 hold of something like INIDOCument and SDML.TEX similar things can be
 done)

We are working very closely with the IPG on resolving all of the
issues around the internationalization of VAX DOCUMENT, including
those mentioned in .4.

    Does this mean I can print DOCUMENT output to both POSTSCRIPT and
    LN03 to the queue on the LN03R? I thought it was POSTSCRIPT only?

693.7LN3 files seem to print fine without expensive fonts ...MARCUS::SKEELICO 269 - 2182Wed Jul 22 1987 22:0212
    To print anything but POSTSCRIPT on your LN03R, you need the special
    print symbiont that translates it (e.g., plain ASCII, LN3, etc.)
    into postscript. This works VERY well! In fact, to print POSTSCRIPT
    with this symbiont installed with its native defaults you have to
    specifically *tell* it *not* to do a translation.

    The printer is really at its best (i.e., fastest, sharpest) -- happiest
    -- if you feed it POSTSCRIPT, but I've been printing LN03 documentation
    for the last 1.5 weeks via the new symbiont and I'm "virtually"
    thrilled  ...

 To my own surprize all kits copied quickly last night. Anyone near the
 DECnet area 50 can copy the kit from this end too:

    IJSAPL::$1$DJA19:[KIT.DOC]*.*

 It includes the Document kit, the internal kit, the LN03 fonts, the
 EDUOVER set as well as all V1_*.LN03 documentation files

    RE: previous few...

    Am I reading this correctly in that we can print .LN3 files on Scouts
    and LPS40s and not have to pay for any LN03 fonts? Are there *any*
    fonts to be payed for with these machines?

693.11It's not free, you can just use it in more placesVAXUUM::DEVRIESM.D. -- your Device DoctorThu Jul 23 1987 10:0011
    RE: LN03 fonts

    You can print LN03 files on other printers (through translator
    symbionts) because the VAX DOCUMENT LN03 files already contain the
    font data -- and you paid the royalty for that font data when you
    got the LN03 font kit.

    Also, that translation software is part of the LPS40 kit, and is
    available for the LN03R as well (just ending field test).
