656.0. "Frustration with "\" inconsistencies" by CASEE::CLARK (Ward Clark) Tue Jul 14 1987 13:22

    When I first started using DOCUMENT and reading this conference, I read
    some discussion about the inconsistent use of "\" in tag arguments.
    That is, is some cases the "\" can be surrounded by white space and in
    others the argument list must be space-free.

    Now that I've had some time to experience the frustrations resulting
    from the inconsistent interpretation of "\", I wanted to add my voice
    to the discussion. Alas, a DIR/TITLE search didn't locate the existing
    discussion. So I've restarted the discussion in this new topic.

    What I find especially frustrating is that when I've erroneously
    included white space in an argument list, the DOCUMENT diagnostics have
    usually not pointed very directly at the source of the error.

    Althought I think that white space makes my DOCUMENT source more
    readable, I've fallen into the habit of cramming everything together to
    avoid wasted formatting runs.

656.1Already fixed?BUNSUP::LITTLETodd Little, New York Area SWS, 323-4475Wed Jul 15 1987 13:175
    I thought this was fixed in V1.0. The developers have acknowledged
    the problem, and I don't recall them saying it was intended or was
    going to remain the way it was in pre V1.0, i.e. inconsistent.

    yes, I believe we have found and fixed the inconsistencies in
    V1.0. Note that the symptom occurs as a result in some cases of
    how a tag definition processes its argument list, so while I can't
    say with certainty that we have corrected them all at this point,
    but have fixed all that have been identified as problems.
656.3Another case that doesn't workAUTHOR::WELLCOMESteveTue Aug 04 1987 15:3017
    I just found another case where space around a \ causes problems.
    If you have

    	<CHAPTER>(This is a chapter title \NAME_CHAP)

    the title is not completely right-justified; the space at the end
    of the title text is preserved so the title line ends one space
    to the left of the right margin. Compare to the results you get
    with

    	<CHAPTER>(This is a chapter title\NAME_CHAP)

    Is this a bug, feature, or fixed in a later version? (I'm using
    T01-001 (BL7).

656.4Design flaw, not tag errorCLOSET::ANKLAMTue Aug 11 1987 11:184

    re .3 This is a bug; it only affects doctypes that set the chapter
    title flush right on the page (soft.hand, for instance).
