562.0. "How do I get my output?" by NEVADA::HELLIWELL (Dick Helliwell, CXO1-2/N23, 522-2009) Thu Jun 25 1987 19:05

I have recently installed T1.0 of document. Since we don't have LN01 fonts, I
have not installed LN01 support. Unfortunately, the only output media on our
cluster (with the exception of a line printer) is an LN01! I have installed both
POSTSCRIPT and LN03 support. I cannot get the postscript output to print on our
Apple printers which are connected to an Ultrix system. I cannot get the
postscript output to print on an LPS40 which I am accessing via the same Ultrix
system. I have seen inferences in this conference that LN03 output can be
printed on postscript printers (I assume via some translation). Can anyone guide
me to a solution? We will be getting an LPS40 which will be accessible from our
VAX cluster in the future, but I would like to be able to print stuff now.

562.1It seems simple.REGENT::BROOMHEADDon't panic -- yet.Fri Jun 26 1987 11:465
    Well, when *I* send a non-PostScript file to my LPS40, I put
    everything into one file, not a series of files on one line,
    and I refrain from mentioning that the data[type (?)] is
    PostScript.  This works for me.

        If you have LPS40 support installed on your VMS system, you
        should have several different client queues, with different
        default data types. There should be a queue with a name
        like "ANSI_server" (where "server" is the node name of the
        LPS40). Queuing to that queue will print LN03 files correctly.

        To print PostScript, queue to "POSTSCRIPT_server".

        In each case, the symbiont automatically handles any necessary
        conversions and formatting when passing the job off to the
        actual device queue, "LPS40$server". You can also queue
        your job directly to that queue, with the qualifier

        	/param="data_type=postscript"

        		or

        	/param="data_type=ansi"

        The default LPS40 installation also supports ReGIS and Tektronix
        4014 translation.

562.3Yeah, that's the ticket!RANCHO::HELLIWELLDick Helliwell, CXO1-2/N23, 522-2009Fri Jun 26 1987 13:525
Re: .2

Thanks for the response. That was what I needed to know. I will inform my system
manager that we need the LPS40 support on our cluster to do POSTSCRIPT/LN03
output.
562.4Only on VMS thoVAXUUM::KAIKOWSun Jun 28 1987 12:373
Ummmmmm, it was not clear to me (on a quick reading) that the replies to this
topic pointed out that the files can ONLY be printed under VMS, not under
ULTRIX.
562.5Really, not ULTRIX?BUNSUP::LITTLETodd Little NJCD SWS 323-4475Mon Jun 29 1987 12:157
    Two things come to mind. Is it really true that you can't copy
    DOCUMENT Postscript files to an ULTRIX system and print them there?
    Also, why would you need to do this. Just installing the Printserver
    server software on your VMS system will allow either your ULTRIX
    or VMS system to print the files, won't it?
