The differences between BL7 and BL8 were mainly bug fixes, some
new fonts (30pts, I think it was), and improved MCS support (in
indexing and monospaced examples). We are going to the SDC at
the end of next month, and will probably have the final internal
version by then.
The conversion process is essentially the same; there were no more
tag name changes. The converter itself has had a number of bug fixes.
I'd appreciate comments from people who installed BL8 after BL7
as to whether it was worth the effort.

I'd also like to know the answer to the first part of Marc's third question.
Thanks.

554.3 | BL8 definitely worthwhile | DECWET::CUSTER | | Thu Jun 25 1987 13:23 | 11 |
| Re .1
By all means, install BL8 if you're doing any significant DOCUMENT
work. The bugs fixes are worth the installation effort (at least they
[definitely!] were for us). Since no tags change from BL7 to BL8, you
can only benefit by switching to the latest version -- you don't have
to recode anything. Additionally, if you still have files to convert,
the converter is much more stable and error-free in BL8 than in BL7.

554.4 | | MARTY::FRIEDMAN | | Thu Jun 25 1987 14:23 | 17 |
| We in CUP/ML have decided to stick with BL7 until V1 is available.
Patti, do you see any problem with that?
I feel that there would be too much confusion if we had BL6, 7 and
8 available in the same group all at that same time. We still have
quite a few books that are being done in BL6--in some cases because
that is the only baselevel where the doctype is supported.
--aside--
We were using RSX11M and MICROVMS, but these have gone away and
we would prefer not to make them into local doctypes. It will be
painful but necessary to switch to other doctypes.
--end aside--

| The external version of the V1.0 kit will be ready in about two weeks.
I'm not sure yet how much incremental work is involved in getting out the
internal version of this baselevel, but we'll let you know as soon as we
know.

554.6 | Thanks - some more questions. | PRSIS4::BURESI | Marc, Paris, DTN 858-5395 | Fri Jun 26 1987 04:30 | 15 |
| Thank you all for your replies. The situation is clearer for me now.
Still another question: I actually installed what I guess was BL7 on a
separate computer, still using BL6 on the other until I convert.
I'm now probably going to upgrade the BL6 machine. How difficult would
it be to upgrade from BL6 to BL8 directly ? Are the installation guide
and release notes of BL7 enough to perform the installation ?
Finally, could you let me know (a pointer to the relevant notes is
enough, a "dir/title=kit" and a "dir/title=doc" didn't give me the
answer) where are located the kit and doc of BL7 and BL8 ?
Thanks and regards,
Marc.

See 1.8 for information on the kit and documentation. There is no
difficulty in going directly from 06 to 08, but you need the
T1.0 (BL7) special edition of the release notes explaining all the
differences between 6 and 7 (and above). (This file is
CLOSET::USE3$:[SDML.BL7]DOCT10_RELEASE_NOTES.LN3 or .LNO)

554.10 | BL8 files run under BL7? | COOKIE::JOHNSTON | | Fri Jun 26 1987 20:51 | 15 |
| Here's an odd question -- are there any problems to anticipate when
creating files under BL8 and running them under BL7, aside from the
index and toc issues?
I'm teaching a class next week and have student accounts with access to
BL8; but found out today (contrary to earlier information) that some of
the students have access from their regular accounts only to a BL7
version. I want to provide them with any necessary "regression"
cautions.
Thanx

554.11 | mainly processing issues | CLOSET::ANKLAM | | Mon Jun 29 1987 10:16 | 8 |

The main differences are processing issues:
- table of contents and index inclusion
- the /LIST qualifier (and contents of .LIS file)
- the naming of batch job log files
