548.0. "Changed fonts due to ...?" by FNYFS::WYNFORD (The Rented Loony) Tue Jun 23 1987 12:52

    I don't have the release notes to hand so this may have already
    been covered...

    We changed from BL7 with LN01s to BL8 with LN03s on one machine
    recently, keeping local design files intact (apart from renaming).
    A number of people complained that documents were "different" and
    I wondered what they meant until I reset one of my old ones! It
    seems that the fonts used have changed although the DESIGN file
    hasn't. The typefaces seem heavier and a couple of points larger
    for the same definition with the result that tables which were clear
    before now have columns running close together and so on.

    Is this correctable easily by changing the defs in the DESIGN file
    or is this a symptom of a bigger problem? I hope the former. Does
    it come from DOCUMENT or the laser printers?

    Thanks,

    Gavin

548.1Some of it, at least, is a difference in devicesVAXUUM::DEVRIESM.D. -- your Device DoctorTue Jun 23 1987 13:064
    I don't know if there have been design changes, but it is a fact
    that LN03's tend to write darker and bolder than LN01's.

    Is it because the LN01 is a WRITE BLACK device and the LN03 is a
    WRITE WHITE device?

    The old font environments for the LN01 used some "pseudo" sizes, so you
    may well have noticed differences. BL8 contains the same typefaces
    for text and headings, but in their true point sizes and weights.
    Also, the monospaced typeface for BL8 (and V1.0) is completely
    different from the LN01 monospace. I also agree with Mark that
    LN03's tend to print darker and bolder than LN01's.

548.4Back to the drawing board...FNYFS::WYNFORDThe Rented LoonyWed Jun 24 1987 10:057
    Thanks for the explanation, Lee. I'll modify the local design file
    to use different fontsizes to try to get back to what my users prefer!
    :-)

    Jack, were you being facetious by any chance?

548.5No joke--but it does a good job, however it worksVAXUUM::DEVRIESM.D. -- your Device DoctorWed Jun 24 1987 16:5922

    I don't know for sure, but I suspect that it's simple a matter of
    the engineering specs on pixel size. I've heard of write-white
    devices that users thought were too light. Since "write-white"
    carves out the blank parts of the page, larger pixels would decrease
    the proportion of black on the page.

    Then, too, the plain LN03 (as opposed to the LN03 PLUS) always writes
    an even number of pixels in a continuous line, so it really would
    produce more black than the pattern required (since the rounding
    is in favor of the black). I understand that is not the case with
    the LN03 PLUS, but it still looks nice and robust.

    So there you have it, Jack. The ultimate in conjecture and supposition
    to answer your technical question. Anything else? :-)

548.6a possible factor?ATLAST::BOUKNIGHTEverything has an outlineTue Jun 30 1987 22:4015
    no, I was not being facetious. Laser print engines fall into two
    classes: WRITE BLACK and WRITE WHITE. The determination is based
    on whether the "dots" in the picture written by the laser are
    BLACK or WHITE in the picture. I believe its true that WRITE WHITE
    laser engines are not quite as crisp and clean as WRITE BLACK laser
    engines.

    I believe the LN03 is a WRITE WHITE laser engine design. I don't
    know what the LN01 is. I was asking to see if this was a factor
    to consider.

    (I'm sure someone from hardware will correct any incorrect information
    in the above).
