546.0. "Designing your own tags" by VAXUUM::KOHLBRENNER () Mon Jun 22 1987 17:57

People have asked about how they might define their own tags.

We have a book in preparation called
The Tag Designer's Guide, which will explain all.
That book is still a few months away from publication.

Until the book is published, it does not make sense to try to
design your own tags. If we were to supply partial information on tag
design, it would only get you in trouble and get us more questions.

We have a book called The DOCTYPE Designer's Guide, which is part
of the version 1 documentation. It explains how to modify an existing
doctype to suit your layout needs. Basically, you can change design
parameters that control fonts and spacing, headers and footers, page
size, etc, for the global tags.

The DOCTYPE DEsigner's Guide does not describe how to design tags, however.
So you are stuck with the current tags.

We made the decision not to make the Tag Designer's Guide part of the
EXTERNAL product many months ago. And our efforts in the interim
have been on getting that EXTERNAL product (which the customers pay for)
into the best possible shape before it goes to the SDC.

We recognize that many users, internal and external, will want to
design their own tags as well as modify design parameters. But time
and budget said that we would have to put off the tag design book
to a later release.

    I am very glad to hear about the announcement of the Tag Designer's
    Guide. It will be a great enhancement to the document documentation
    set.

    Please keep me up to date with the developments

    Thanks,

    Oswald.
546.2Problem making new .STT fileQRTRS::COGHILLSteve Coghill, Luke 14:28Tue Aug 04 1987 11:4726
    Back under BL6 there was a sparse document explaining how to design
    tags and generate a new .STT file. We did this for several document
    types and all went well.

    When BL7 came out we converted a couple and no problems.

    We skipped BL8 and yesterday I installed V1.0 (BL9?). Now when I try
    to build the .STT file with the command

    	DOCUMENT file.GDX DOCTYPE TAG

    I get no .STT file. The system seems to process the file (elapsed time
    observation), but I can find no output. When I tried a /OUTPUT=FOO.STT
    just to see what happened, DOCUMENT renamed my .GDX file to FOO.STT.

    Has something changed between BL7 and V1.0? I made sure that the
    DOC$DESIGNS.DAT file in DOC$PERSONAL_FORMATS had the correct designations.

    The DOC$DESTINATIONS.DAT file has the following for the TAG_TABLE
    destination:

    DESTINATION TAG_TABLE TAG -
    /exclude_action=(text_formatter,device_converter,print) -
    /output_filetype=.STT

546.4OK, I give up -- where is the book?CASEE::CLARKWard ClarkTue Aug 25 1987 13:327
    I've seen several mentions of the Tag Designer's Guide in various
    topics but have searched in vain for a pointer to the draft document.

    Now that Patti has provided me with a prototype <AXIOM> tag definition,
    I'd like to do my homework before taking the prototype out for a spin.
