521.0. "Just another index wierdie!" by NCADC1::PEREZ (The sensitivity of a dung beetle.) Wed Jun 17 1987 19:42

    Where has \permute gone?

I ran a document today and created the index entries. I wanted
to create an index with the entries broken up like they were under
BL6 but DOCUMENT says that my <X>(something split up\permute) is invalid.
How do I get DOCUMENT to do the permutations of the index entries?

    thanks,
    Dave P

521.1PERMUTE not supportedCLOSET::ANKLAMThu Jun 18 1987 11:517

It just plain went. It came along by default when we picked up
DSRPLUS's indexer, but we decided not to support it. Now I
do wonder if there are many DSRPLUS files around with it that
will run afoul of SDML after conversion ?

But Patti, I LOVED /PERMUTE. It made indexes look really professional.
It gave entry points from different angles and made it much easier
for new users (customers) to find the abstruse bits of information
buried in project documentation we produce.

Could we get this revived? Are there other users out there that
would benefit from having this capability again? (I'm going for
    the groundswell of support here)

If there is a groundswell, we'll put it on the wishlist.

If you do keep permute, it might be wise to put a warning in the
documentation. It is a powerful tool that can really mess up an
    index if used carelessly.

Vote for \PERMUTE! Save your fingers from needless wear! And a
FREE terminal cleaning kit for the first 100 users who send in
    their ballots by noon today!

Seriously, I found \PERMUTE worthwhile, and although it can certainly
be emulated through additional entries of <X>, why make more work
for writers when it's something the computer can easily handle?

You folks must write much more cryptic index entries than I do. If
I used /PERMUTE on the indexes I tend to write, the results would
marevelously lengthy but largely useless. I personally have no use
for /PERMUTE, but I can imagine indexes for which it might be helpful.
One would have to be very careful about writing the original index
    though.
