520.0. "Anyone know the IBM GML language?" by COOKIE::JOHNSTON () Wed Jun 17 1987 16:27

Is anyone out there familiar with the IBM markup language GML (generalized
markup language, I think) ? Or do you know someone who is familiar with GML?

An engineer is phasing into being the editor for SQL ANSI/ISO standard.
This position was formerly held by an IBM person who coded the sources
with GML. We would now like to convert it to SDML.

I'm assuming that there's no such thing as a GML to SDML converter; so
now I'm looking for documentation that explains the GML syntax, which
uses many abbreviations some of which are intuitive and some of which are not.

Thanx

    I was an IBM DCF/GML Script user for a while at my last job. I
    don't know if I kept any documentation - I'll check.

520.4Your responses are gratifying...COOKIE::JOHNSTONFri Jun 19 1987 11:4712
The response to .0 has sbeen much better than I'd hoped for; very
gratifying! (I'd was holding my breath that there would be even one
person who knew about GML!)

Other notes readers are welcome to reply here or to send mail to Jim
Melton at COOKIE::MELTON. Jim is DEC's DSRI architect and the person
taking over editorship of the ANSI/ISO SQL standard; he's also the
person who's actually converting the document from GML to SDML.

Thanx much!

520.5ANSI and ISO style doc typesCLOSET::KAIKOWSat Jun 20 1987 18:3317
I am in DEC's Corporate Standrds group.

For some time, I've been working with Patti's group to develop ANSI and ISO
style specific doc types for standards.

In fact, I am typsetting a standard for ANSI.

When the doc types are ready, they will be made available to DEC's standards
reps (and others). However, these doc types conform to externally specified
style manuals, not to any particular need within DEC.

All such doc types are planned to be based on the REPORT doc type.
I have recommended to Jim Melton that he start working with the REPORT doc type
until the ANSI and/or ISO doc types are ready.

Interested parties can keep track of progress in this area by monitoring the
CORPORATE_STANDARDS conference. Use KP 7 to get the entry.
