I'm having problems trying to install BL8 on my system. I only have
about 13000 free blocks of space on my system disk. I can install the
vanilla BL8 easily, but I don't have any room left over for the LN03
fonts. I thought about installing BL8 on DUA1 which has about 60,000
free blocks, but I'm not sure that will work either. VMSINSTAL first
copies savesets to a subdirectory of SYS$UPDATE before moving them to
their target directories. Exactly how much space will I need on my
system disk DURING the installation of the LN03 fonts?

YOu might make it with 13000 blocks. The LN03 fonts take about
12,300 blocks, according to the Installation Guide for the LN03
fonts.
You are right that they first have to get "restored" from the
backup saveset into a working directory, then they get copied
to the target disk, one by one, with a delete from the working
directory and a purge of the target directory.
Since you would be using DUA1 as the target, the space on DUA0
should not be much over the 12300 that is spec'd in the Install
Guide.
When you are going to the system disk, the space required
is a little more, because at some point the file actually exists
in two places (potentially). I saw one version of VMSINSTAL
that does not do a copy, but does a rename when the target is
the same structure as the working directory. But VMSINSTAL keeps
changing from one release of VMS to the next, so I would hate to
count on it to always do the rename. And it can't do the rename
unless you tell it to purge old versions. (I can't imagine why
you wouldn't tell it to purge, but that IS an option...)
So with 13000 blocks on your system disk, you should have enough
to do the installation to an alternate disk.

I made it by about 1000 blocks.
Thanks,
