478.0. "EDUOVER T1.1 (BL8) Kit Location" by SANTEE::GREENE (Michael Greene) Mon Jun 08 1987 10:15
EDUOVER T1.1 is finally here! EDUOVER T1.1 runs with VAX DOCUMENT
T1.0-Update (BL8).
This kit IS TEMPORARILY (until KIWI:: returns) located at:
for BL8 SANTEE""::EDUOVER011.A
for BL7 SANTEE""::EDUOVER010.A
Problems, questions to SANTEE::GREENE.
Michael
Here are a few release notes for EDUOVER T1.1:
Well, at long last a kit is available. The kit works only with BL8 of
DOCUMENT. (BL8 is the field test update of DOCUMENT T1.0)
If you find bugs, please report them to me at SANTEE::GREENE. As I
issue new releases, I'll post a note in the DOCUMENT notes file.
I can't promise a date for the next one (this is only a midnight
project for me -- lots of midnights!!!) .
I would ask that if you have suggestions for additions, changes,
etc., please send me mail or post a note. And if you make a change/addition
that might be useful to others, please let us know as well.

SOFTWARE NOTES
--------------
1) The only functional change since EDUOVER T1.0 (the last version
which was for DOCUMENT BL7) is that the SUPERHEADS tag has been
changed to RUNNING_TITLE to be consistent with BL8 of DOCUMENT.
You should note that this change is ONLY IMPROVES consistency, it
doesn't actually perfectly match. In the new version of DOCUMENT the
RUNNING_TITLE tag takes multiple arguments. In EDUOVER T1.1,
RUNNING_TITLE takes only one argument. (The difference is that
EDUOVER uses one line for the DIGITAL logo, while DOCUMENT provides
two lines of text but no logo.) I changed the name of the tag
because files which are processed by DOC$CONVERT will change the tag
name automatically.
2) Several bugs around the automatic numbering of overheads have been
corrected.
3) EDUOVER's installation procedure does not support the concept of
fonts being stored on another machine on the network. If this is the
case at your site, you'll need to install EDUOVER by hand as opposed
to using VMSINSTAL. A future version of the installation procedure for
EDUOVER will accomodate this approach.
4) Since the DOC$SETUP file went away, a short one has been provided
for users who wish to produce LANDSCAPE overheads. It's in:
DOC$LOCAL:EDU$EDUOVER_SETUP
This should be added to their LOGIN.COM file if they wish to produce
landscape overheads.
5) The rest of the changes in this version are simply to match
changes to file names, etc. made in DOCUMENT BL8.
6) EDUOVER does support tables on overheads. See samples in the .SDML
sample files provided.
DOCUMENTATION
-------------
1) The documentation is not complete. It is in draft form only. In particular
the "user guide" portion of it is not there. The "reference" section
is complete and accurate to the best of my knowlege.
2) Sample SDMLs files are in the documentation and on the kit.
3) The EDUOVER.LN03 file contains the manual & TOC & Index. To
provide a complete manual you need to process the sample .SDML files
and collate them into the document at the appropriate places.
4) The .SDML file for the manual is included in case you wish to make changes.
5) I don't write for a living (at least not documentation), so be nice!
Suggestions for improvement are always welcome.
WISHLIST
--------
Items currently on the wishlist are:
1) Postscript output support
2) Ability to annotate overheads (e.g. for scripts) in-line with the
other tags, and then process to either include or exclude the script info.
(More info in the DOCUMENT_FT notes file.)

478.1 | LINE TOO SHORT? - who cares | ATLAST::BOUKNIGHT | Everything has an outline | Wed Jun 10 1987 15:22 | 8 |
| We installed T1.1, and everything seems to work fine except:
We get a lot of LINE TO SHORT errors when we process the tables
in EDUOVER_SAMPLE2.SDML.
Any one got any ideas where this is coming from?

478.2 | 'underfull hbox' to BL7 users | CLOSET::ANKLAM | | Wed Jun 10 1987 15:30 | 9 |
|
We have been working on that. Pre-BL8, TeX's listing file contained
the 'underfull hbox' messages that are harmless. Since a file
completed sucessfully, noone ever saw these in the listing file.
Now that the message is a VMS-level message, they are quite obvious.
The fact is that with the large type faces, TeX thinks that a lot
of lines are really too short to be esthetically pleasing.

478.3 | Be bad | CLOSET::SEGAL | | Thu Jun 11 1987 14:09 | 7 |
|
Try setting \hbadness=\tolerance, or (more drastically)
\hbadness=\10000, and add \raggedrightspacing to the arg
for \normaltextfontspecs. This will suppress most, if not all,
underfull messages for overheads.

478.5 | Documentation? | PROSE::SYSTEM | | Fri Jun 19 1987 15:27 | 6 |
| We just installed EDUOVER T1.1 - everything went well, but
we can't find the documentation, or the sample .sdml files.
Were these supposed to be part of the kit? Or do we have
to copy them separately?
|
478.6 | Never mind... | PROSE::SYSTEM | | Fri Jun 19 1987 17:04 | 2 |
| We found it. Sorry!
