My earlier note on master index generation was confusing. Here's an example. The master index data file MASTERINDEX.INX_LIST contains three files. index1.inx index2.inx index3.inx $ docu masterindex.inx_list s.r post /index/master_index %DOC-I-IDENT, VAX DOCUMENT T1.0-008 [ M a s t e r I n d e x G e n e r a t i o n ]... %INX-I-IDENT, DOCINDEX version X1.01 %INX-I-PROCFILE, processing file 'WORK6:[GILLIAM.SDML]INDEX1.BRN;1' %INX-S-COMPLETE, processing complete 'WORK6:[GILLIAM.SDML]INDEX1.BRN;1' %INX-I-PROCFILE, processing file 'WORK6:[GILLIAM.SDML]INDEX2.BRN;1' %INX-S-COMPLETE, processing complete 'WORK6:[GILLIAM.SDML]INDEX2.BRN;1' %INX-I-PROCFILE, processing file 'WORK6:[GILLIAM.SDML]INDEX3.BRN;1' %INX-S-COMPLETE, processing complete 'WORK6:[GILLIAM.SDML]INDEX3.BRN;1' %INX-S-CREATED, 'WORK6:[GILLIAM.SDML]INDEX1.TEX;1' created The resultant master TEX file INDEX1.TEX uses the name of the first input file in the data file instead of the input file name MASTERINDEX. The output is fine. Also, DOCINDEX mentions BRN files. Weren't these going away as of bl08?

In V1.0, the output file name will default to the filename of the INX_LIST file, not the first file in the list. Also -- you are right, the file type BRN should not be displayed; this is already fixed for V1.0. patti | |||||
448.2 | Identify INX files being read? | STAR::MCMULLEN | See you around the galaxy | Tue Sep 01 1987 14:33 | 19 |
I'm concerned about a change to the Master Index build procedure from the Baselevel 8 behavior to its current (baselevel 9) behavior. As shown in Mason's earlier sample in this note, the build used to identify the INX files being read during the build. This was partucularly useful for isolating indexing errors in specific books. When I ran a test-build of the VMS Master Index under Baselevel 9, the build no longer identified the files being read. Instead, the messages "End of first pass over input" and "End of second pass over input" showed the completion of each INX file's processing. If one is trying to build a large Master Index, as I am doing for the VMS doc set, it is especially helpful to be able to pinpoint the exact books which contain indexing errors. This feature was available under Baselevel 8, but apparently is missing under Baselevel 9. Joe |
