404.0. "Some advice on Bl8 docs, please" by COOKIE::JOHNSTON () Wed May 20 1987 19:52

I need some advice. I just looked at the final cost of copying the BL8
documentation for my engineering group. Gads! 35 copies of UG1 and
UG2 is $772! (about 1104 pages at 2 cents an image).

Ever on the lookout for saving my funder a few bucks, it occurred to me that
it might be possible/desirable to copy only a part of the BL8 docs. If you
(the developers and writers) were merging the doc sets, what would you
recommend? To copy the first 9 chapters and the appendices of the UG1?
What about the UG2?

And by the way, how does your SDC schedule look? Was it September for V1 that
you were shooting for?

Thanx,

Rose

    I answered this question in an earlier note; I wouldn't bother
    reprinting all the bl8 documents. You might just print one,
    compare it with a bl7 one, and decide what parts you want to copy.

    We are looking at the end of july for submission to SDC.

404.2Here's how I handled itCOOKIE::JOHNSTONFri May 22 1987 14:1729
For anyone else interested in copying only a part of the doc set, this is
what I did:

1. Copied Chapters 1 through 9, and the appendices of the BL8 UG1

    Chapter 10 contains the alphabetical listing of tag descriptions,
    which I thought was worth saving from BL7.

2. Kept Chapter 13 (tag descriptions) of the BL7 UG1.

3. Combined the BL8 and BL7 UG1 contents, doing some minor cut and
    paste to show BL8 Ch. 1 - 9, BL7 Chapter 13, and BL8 App. A - E.

4. Copied both BL8 and BL7 indexes. I noted on the first page of
    the BL8 index that entries with a page # of 10-n should be
    ignored. Similarly, I noted on the first page of the BL7 index
    that entries with a page # of 13-n were the only ones that
    should be looked at.

Salvaging the BL7 Chapter 13 saved about 50% in copying times and costs.

I made only a minimum number of copies of the UG2. I'll provided
copies of particular doctype chapters on request only. (Here's the chapter,
there's the copier, have fun.)
