394.1 | Beware of old logicals | CRAYON::GENT | Party gone out of bounds -- B52's | Tue May 19 1987 17:22 | 12 |
| If you are installing the field test update (BL08), beware
that you may have an old /SYSTEM logical for DOC$ROOT that
can mess things up. DOC$ROOT is now defined as /SYSTEM/EXEC.
You may need to go back an undefine the supervisor-mode
logical by hand:
$ DEASS/SYSTEM DOC$ROOT
I mention this because the error message implies it is looking
in [DOCTOOLS...] not the latest [DOC$TOOLS...]

394.2 | is this 7 or 8? | CLOSET::ANKLAM | | Tue May 19 1987 17:44 | 10 |

re: 1.1
I'll have to figure out how to remove/replace that, since it is
no longer necessary to run the partial installations for device
support. I don't think this has anything to do with the problem
in .0 here.
Are you installing BL7 or BL8 ?

394.3 | confused | WONDER::SYSTEM | | Wed May 20 1987 10:46 | 10 |
| I believ the kit is BL7. The release notes in the kit are dated
Feb 20, 1987.
I was under the impression, after reading note 1.1, that a partial
installation was needed to support all devices after doing an
initial FULL INSTALLATION and saying YES only to lineprinter support.
Am I missing something here?

394.4 | two baselevels | CLOSET::ANKLAM | | Wed May 20 1987 11:37 | 6 |

No, you're not missing anything. Note 1.1 applies to Base Level
7, in which the full and several partials were required.
The problem was fixed in Base Level 8, for which there is a new
kit (as of last week).

394.5 | Should I go to BL8 instead of 7? | WONDER::SYSTEM | | Wed May 20 1987 14:42 | 3 |
|
Well if I were to install BL8 instead of BL7, would any users have
a problem in converting their BL6 files to the new baselevel?
|
394.6 | yes | CLOSET::ANKLAM | | Wed May 20 1987 17:03 | 10 |
|
They would have to convert their files, just as they would have
had to for Base Level 7. The are in a little bit better position
than people who installed base level 7, because the converter has
been kept up to date with bug reports.
So, yes, you should go to bl8. There is no difference as far as
the users are concerned, but there are a fair number of bug fixes.
