392.0. "Are list widows fixed in BL8?" by COOKIE::JOHNSTON () Tue May 19 1987 14:32

Does baselevel 8 fix the problem of widows in lists, including nested
lists?

A document produced under baselevel 7 resulted in something like the
example shown below. If it's significant, the document was produced for
MEMO and LN03 destination.

1.0 DOG BREEDS AND CAT BREEDS

The list below shows the different breeds by which dogs and cats
     are known.

1. Dogs
    o Heinz 57
    o Mutt
    o Purebred

2. Cats
    o Alley
    o Tom

(new page)

    o Calico

2.0 WHY CATS CLIMB ON COUNTERS

Who knows? They won't do it while you're looking, but turn
your back and they *will* climb on your counters!

There was no specific work done on penalties for page breaks in
lists. This has been a lower priority item.

It's too bad that DOCUMENT doesn't take special care to trap widows and
orphans. Doing so would certainly make for nicer documents (as Rose's
example showed).

Unfortunately, it's the writers and editors that catch it in the Kidneys
when DOCUMENT does something silly or allows silly things to happen (such
as widows). My manager doesn't care that I can't make sure a document
doesn't have widows. He just says "That line at the top of the page is
ugly - can't you move it to the previous page? And I say, tail between my
legs, that I can't because that's the way VAX DOCUMENT does things.

Please consider fixing widows and orphans in the next version.

Also, please give me the capability to do a page-break test so that I can
make sure I don't generate window lines anymore.

Thanks!

We hope there are not too many widows, and we *do* give people a
way to modify page breaks during a final, 'clean-up' pass.

The wishlist item for a .test-page like tag is indeed on the list.
