390.1 | _char or _after ? | CLOSET::ANKLAM | | Tue May 19 1987 08:34 | 5 |

Have to you looked at the <align_char> and <align_after> tags? They
seem to be what you are looking for.

390.2 | No ! BUT... | 51336::LISSDANIELS | Torbjorn Lissdaniels, Network Services Stockholm | Tue May 19 1987 09:21 | 21 |
| Well I spent the time since I put in the note to do this with
<ALIGN_CHAR> but since OVERHEAD-font is propotional there is no
way of doing it with spaces of the size of a digit.
<ALIGN_AFTER>(word) seem to require a heading or some text on some
line preceding the list. I did not want any text preceeding my table
this time...
I almost did it with <TABLE> but I could not get the right BULLET
in front of the text...
I really want to <ALIGN> to a position on the paper (pixel) or to
a declared <TAB>-stop.
* So in addition to 390.0 I need a <SET_TAB_STOP>(pos[\pos[\...]])
The sense of absolute spacing exist already in the <TABLE_SETUP>
so it is possible to do... PLEASE MAKE IT SIMPLE.
OR alternatively, give a TAG that turn on or off the recognition
of the TAB-char in free text e.g. <TAB_ON> and <TAB_OFF> and let
GUTENTAG decipher it for TEX.

390.3 | Try simple lists around unnumbered lists | FNYFS::WYNFORD | The Rented Loony | Wed May 20 1987 04:46 | 8 |
| I had to do some overheads recently and found that with a short
unnumbered list all the elements were way over on the left and looked
quite ridiculous. What I did was enclose the list in successive
simple lists until the various elements had moved over enough to
the right to look the way I wanted. This has the effect of providing
you with a TAB-stop without any extra effort...

390.4 | <line>(indent) ? | CLOSET::ANKLAM | | Wed May 20 1987 10:16 | 4 |

If all you want to do is to move text over, you can use the
<line>(Indent) tag.

390.5 | Want to do 2 cols. SIMPLY ! | 51336::LISSDANIELS | Torbjorn Lissdaniels, Network Services Stockholm | Thu May 21 1987 04:53 | 32 |
| Ok, What I REALLY tried to do THIS time was, to get an unumbered
list with two collumns. i.e. I wanted the nice big bullet, but also
a second collumn aligned on the right hand of the page too.
Doing it with <TABLE> would be ok IF I could get the BIG BULLET.
I did not find any way of creating that <MATH_CHAR> put the bullet
too low and too small.
I've might have sounded really irritated, I was at the time, but
the point I was trying to make is that I you could make the use
DOCUMENT more easy for occasional user like myself by adding
TAGs that are "normal" and logical to use in wordprocessing.
Aligning text on a TAB-stop is THE MOST SIMPLE WAY I can find.
<ALIGN>(pos) is more general and can be used to implement a <TAB>.
I feel quite strongly about software that pretend to be more
intelligent that the user, ( I guess my pride is hurt ) and
especially when it comes to OVERHEADS there have to be BIG
freedom on how to do the layout.
When it comes to other DOC-types I have not used them yet, I
only want to say that document format ( layout ) standards differs
between countries, and that I think DOCUMENT must cater for an
easy way of handling this. I know that the mechanism is there,
but it is well documented enough ? I don't know yet.
I really want Document to be good since Digital need ONE product
that can do it all, compound documents etc. Today everyone have
their own favourite, and the worst is PROsight: "Where is my frendly
PRO with the needed plotter ?"

390.6 | make sure you are measuring the right thing | ATLAST::BOUKNIGHT | Everything has an outline | Thu May 21 1987 14:25 | 5 |
| "tab stop" alignment would be allright if the "column" is specified
in terms of a measurement in picas or something on the page from
the left hand margin.
