383.0. "Document-browsing;FLIP,M1,VIOLA" by 38644::THERIAULT () Sat May 16 1987 08:21

    I remember reading that some earlier version of DOCUMENT used DSR
    to produce line printer output. This was compatible with what FLIP
    could use to generate input for its quick-browsing facilities.
    Are DOCUMENT and FLIP still compatible?
    How can I generate a .FLP from a .GNC?
    M1 (the VWS version of FLIP) is now apparently available on a limited
    basis (if you sign a promise not to distribute it or leak info about
    it to externals). Is the VIOLA project still alive? Is there a
    version of VIOLA still around?
    Someone mentioned DECwindows-based work going on for document browsing.
    Could anyone please post more information?

    Thank you,
    Dan

383.1I'm also interested in FLIPCOOKIE::JOHNSTONSat May 16 1987 16:5715
Some time ago, I asked about FLIP and DOCUMENT in the BL6 notes file.
The answer I received then was that you could *not* get FLIP files from
DOCUMENT files and that there was no plan to provide the capability.

Interesting that you should bring it up now, as I was having a discussion about
the need for FLIP just yesterday, myself.

I hope the developers will consider this capability in the near future!
If you decide such issues based on votes, consider my ballot cast!

Thanx

    No, we no longer support DSRPLUS or FLIP output, nor do we plan
    to do so. Yes, VOILA is alive and well. It was set back quite a
    bit, however, by the change in workstation strategy to DECwindows.
    It will have a DOCUMENT front-end that will allow SDML files to
    be processed for viewing using the VOILA reader.

383.3Anything similar, then?COOKIE::JOHNSTONMon May 18 1987 12:5720
RE: .2

Does that mean that you don't plan any kind of support similar to FLIP,
then either? Or will VOILA provide a similar facility? Am I asking the
right questions?

The closer we come to complete electronic publishing, the shorter review
lead times will become, making an online review facility increasingly
important; manual systems, shoveling documents through inhouse mail are
ugly and will get uglier. This is, of course, just one woman's opinion,
but I don't believe it is in the company's best interests or the
customer's best interests (internal or external) to not consider an
online document review/comment facility.

Do you know of any development anywhere that is addressing this?

Thanx!

Rose

    VOILA is a tool for on-line display, browsing, etc. of documents;
    it is designed for workstations. An early version of it was based
    on some items in FLIP, so exhibits it looks similar in some regards.

    There is a NOTES file for online documentation,
    COLORS::ONLINE_INFORMATION that discusses issues related to various
    online documentation projects.

Is VOILA available for internal use? I checked out the notesfile Patti
mentioned and there was no obvious reference to VOILA.

383.6M1 was the early version prototype?ATLAST::BOUKNIGHTEverything has an outlineMon May 18 1987 16:173
    I believe that early version Patti was refering is M1.

    Patti is correct about the VOILA plans -- you will be able to view
    documentation on the workstation with the same sorts of functionality
    that FLIP offered plus windowing. And, yes, Patti was referring
    to M1, an early prototype of VOILA built on FLIP back when we produced
    DSRPLUS output. (I would like to say that as the person who tried
    to maintain SDML tags for M1 output as DOCUMENT functionality grew
    more complex (per user feedback), I heartily endorsed the decision
    to drop DSRPLUS support. It was very difficult to provide parallel
    support for DSRPLUS and was rapidly looking to become impossible.)

    Anyway, M1 is still available and will display any .FLP file. Anyone
    who wants a pointer to the files should contact me directly at
    VAXUUM::UTT.

    VOILA development is again under way as a DECwindows application,
    but we are some time away from having a baselevel we can release
    to the world. Anyone with a high interest in VOILA should watch
    the COLORS::ONLINE_INFORMATION notes file and/or contact our product
    manager Cathy Foley to be put on the distribution list for VOILA
    phase reviews, etc.
