332.0. "small italic caps?" by REGENT::MURPHY () Fri May 01 1987 16:15
I write for the PrintServer 40 project, so all of my manuals use
small caps. (The trademarked names for PrintServer 40 and PostScript
use small caps.)
In the pre-field test version of DOCUMENT, I defined symbols for PostScript
and PrintServer 40 that used the internal <_smallcaps> tag. For the field
test version, this method has been superseded by the <EMPHASIS>(\SMALLCAPS)
and <EMPHASIS>(\SMALL_BOLDCAPS) tags. These work really well for both LN03
and PostScript output. The only problem is that you can no longer define
a single symbol and use it for both text and headings. For example, I
defined a symbol for PostScript as follows:
<DEFINE_SYMBOL>(POSTSCRIPT\P<EMPHASIS>(ost\SMALLCAPS)S<EMPHASIS>(cript-
\SMALLCAPS))
If I use this symbol in a heading, I get bold cap P and S and regular weight
small caps for the rest. To get the heading to come out all bold, I have
to define a second symbol that uses <EMPHASIS>(\SMALL_BOLDCAPS) and use that.
This is a minor problem, I admit. However, it is related to another problem:
There is no way to specify italicized small caps.
For the book title PostScript Language Reference Manual, I tried using
<REFERENCE>(postscript) with <DEFINE_BOOK_NAME> and with <EMPHASIS>.
Neither gave me small italic caps.
I would like to see a \SMALL_ITALIC_CAPS argument to <EMPHASIS> to go with
\SMALLCAPS and \SMALL_BOLDCAPS, or I would like \SMALLCAPS to be sensitive
to the heading, text, etc. context in which it's used.
