315.0. "SOFTWARE.SPECIFICATION doctype" by DSSDEV::EPPES (Dignity, always dignity) Tue Apr 28 1987 15:28

The SOFTWARE.SPECIFICATION doctype is mentioned in the DOCUMENT
User's Guide Part II, but nowhere in that manual is it described
(i.e. what tags can be used with it, etc.). There is a reference to
the Design Samples manual, but the current version doesn't contain an
example of SOFTWARE.SPECIFICATION. I assume this will be rectified in
    the field test update...?

The reason I'm asking about it is because a developer of my
acquaintance wants to do a spec using DOCUMENT, and asked me whether
there was a template available. I finally found a BL06 product spec
template in the old DOCUMENT conference, which I ran through the
converter and modified for BL07. However, the SOFTWARE.SPECIFICATION
doctype doesn't recognize the <BYLINE> tag, so I changed it to <BY> (as
for docplans), and it still didn't recognize it. So I processed the
template using the DOCPLAN doctype (a ZK local doctype), and it worked
fine. But I'm curious about what SOFTWARE.SPECIFICATION looks like and
    what tags it uses.

The Design Samples book is not being re-issued for FT update. Because
of time constraints its going straight to final production, sorry
no sample of SOFT.SPEC til then.

As to describing the tags available in SOFTWARE.SPEC, all tags
available in the SOFTWARE doctype are available in all its designs:
S.SPEC, S.REF, S.POCKET_REF, and so on. This is true of all the
VAX DOCUMENT doctypes, whether its SOFT.SPEC or MANUAL.GUIDE.

The SOFTWARE front matter tags that you're looking for didn't exist
for FT1 (baselevel 7). The FT update (baselevel 8) includes the
    following tags: <author> <byline> <signatures>.
