293.0. "Can I make a doctype for Legal size paper?" by CONRAD::SERACK (Ken Serack) Wed Apr 22 1987 17:40

I would like to create a doctype that would print on legal (11X14)
paper on the LPS40. I have run into a problem (apparently) with the
device converter. It doesn't like to set text outside of the
    8.5X11 inch boundary.

    I get the following error:

%DVC-E-OFFPAGE, cannot set text outside page boundaries

TEX does not complain about the large page size and in fact all
of the info is in the .tex file, but lines are missing in the .PS
    file.

Is there a known limitation to the page size that can be handled
    by the device converter (postscript).

    Thanks,
    Ken Serack

293.1not yet, but high on the scheduleVAXUUM::DEVRIESThose are features, not bugsMon Apr 27 1987 14:2310
This is high on our list of work items after the V1.0 release,
since it is required for support of our European users (A4 paper).
We have done some but not all of the work thus far. There are still
some open questions about how flexible we need to be, and in what
    way.

So this *will* be done, and quite soon. Sorry that it's not there
    for you right now.

293.2A4 is not "legal size"CLOSET::KAIKOWTue Apr 28 1987 16:044
A4 is not "legal size".

A4 is an international standard size paper, used just about everywhere except
the USA.
293.3A4 never was "legal size"VAXUUM::DEVRIESThose are features, not bugsThu Apr 30 1987 14:2018

...and there was no contention that A4 IS "legal size". Sorry if
    my reply was too concise.

The point is that we will have to support several sizes, including
(but not necessarily limited to) letter, legal and A4.

Since I mentioned the European requirement in the first reply, I
figured that if I didn't say "A4", somebody would point out that
the primary European requirement was NOT "legal", which was
mentioned in the base note. I never expected the obverse association.
