246.0. "How does one set <DATE> in MEMO?" by COOKIE::WITHERS (Le plus ca change...) Mon Apr 13 1987 13:11

How does one change/set the date in the MEMO template. The MEMO_DATE
    tag produces error messages?

    and, as a correlary question:

How does one set the value returned by <DATE>? Is it always the
system time at the start of compilation?

    Thanks,
    BobW

The manual says that "the <date> tag gives you the date based
on the time at which the tag translator begins execution."

The manual says that the <memo_date> tag gives you whatever
    its argument specifies.

Is the documentation incorrect? Is the software not doing what
the documentation says it should do?

After I wrote my entry, I realized that I was not as clear as could
be...Let me try now that I've had some coffee...

There are basically two problems that I was trying to address:

    1) I want to write a MEMO (you know - fancy header and all) and
MEMO gives me a DATE line on the same line as <TO> which contains
today's date. Well, I'd like to be able to specify another date
on the <TO> line without having to change the date on the VAXcluster.

    2) Secondly, when I tried to use <MEMO_DATE> in a MEMO (with the
command DOCUMENT FOO MEMO LN03, I got the error message:

DISK$CSSE_DISK:[WITHERS.DOC_WIERDNESSES]MEMO_DATE.GNC;
Tag <MEMO_DATE> is undefined

A complete copy of the .GNC file and a run of DOCUMENT follow...

More confusion based on the differences between the <MEMO_xxx> tags
in the LETTER doctype (standard, external doctype) and the tags
in the MEMO *doctype* (supplied for Digital Internal Use only with
    the Dec logo etc).

...said confusion due to the fact that the MEMO doctype wasn't
well documented in the release notes...

The MEMO doctype doesn't allow you to change the date. I just checked
the code and it is indeed hard-wired and you can't do anything with
it (unless you change the month, day, and time on your system!)

I will see what's doable with this after we get this next update
    out.

    Well, here we go...

I generated a memo on Friday. Unfortunately, I left someone off
of the CC list. So I'd like to re-generate the memo with an additional
person on the CC list with Friday's date. Could you suggest wording
I might use on the system manager of our cluster (8800,8700,8650,785x3)
and its user population to get all these kind folks to agree to
a date change for half an hour or so...

They said they'd try to fix it. How about cutting them a little
slack. If you have constructive comments, make them, otherwise
please whine in some other notesfile.

Since BL 8 is out and V1 is imminent, has there been any progress on
this question?

It's on the list. Since it is in an internal doctype, I will do
it following completion of testing on the base kit.
