238.0. "lists within table rows" by AUTHOR::R_MCGOWAN () Fri Apr 10 1987 12:12

Blank lines are automatically added to text both before and
after a numbered list. Is there anyway of NOT having these
blank lines?

My problem:

Table rows become unevenly spaced when only some rows have lists.
Whenever a row begins or ends with a list, I get more space
between those rows than between the rows without lists.

238.1Simple lists with arguments??COOKIE::JOHNSTONFri Apr 10 1987 16:274
I'm glad someone else finally brought this up. How about offering a simple list
that takes attributes so that you can have single spaced lists?

    perhaps .1 should be restated? <LIST>(SIMPLE) is single spaced,
    at least in our doctypes.

    I think I understand the problem. There are a few other such
    items on the list-control enhancements for the wish-list (i.e.
    don't space between items in numbered/unnumbered lists).

238.4A NEW addition to wish listAUTHOR::R_MCGOWANMon Apr 13 1987 10:2514
    My problem is NOT spacing between items in a numbered list.

    My problem IS skipping lines before a numbered list begins
    and after the list finishes.

    Since the <table_row> tag automatically skips a line before and
    after its row, SEVERAL extra lines are skipped before and after
    a row in the table if a list begins or ends a row.

    I have a 165-page table (an error message manual) with many rows
    that indicate more than one error condition or more than one way
    of responding to the error condition. Unless I painstakingly
    number each list myself, the rows with lists are not evenly spaced
    with the rows that have no lists.
238.5NOTE seems to suffer the same fateATLAST::BOUKNIGHTEverything has an outlineMon Apr 13 1987 11:267
    This same spacing problem also seems to affect the NOTE tag. My
    notes in SOFTWARE.REFERENCE have this really noticable extra white
    space of at least one and maybe two blank lines, making the note
    stand out awkwardly. I compared it against the same input and doctype
    in BL09-06 and it was properly output with no extra lines there.

    I think I understood the problem with lists inside table rows, what
    I meant was that in order to do it correctly, you would have to
    specify somehow, that no space was required in front of the list.

    <table_row>(first column\<list>(numbered)
                             <le> list item for second column)

    I assume you want to suppress the vertical skip in front of this
    <list>. To do this, you would need a way to distinguish this
    <list> from other lists in front of which you normally want the
    space. Since there have been other requests for control over the
    space before a list, I thought a simple NOSPACE or somesuch option
    would satisfy in all cases.

    If this is not what you meant, I need more information.

    Jack, I'm not sure about the <note> output. This may be an oversight/
    I'll check.

238.7a yes for <nospace>AUTHOR::R_MCGOWANMon Apr 13 1987 16:225
    The <nospace> tag sounds perfect. It's just what I could use.
    Or else, some kind of an argument to a list that would do the
    same thing as the <nospace> tag.

238.8.2 RestatedCOOKIE::JOHNSTONMon Apr 13 1987 19:3116
RE: .2

Yes, I'll restate it. What I meant was that I would like to have
single-spaced and bulleted (or hyphenated or numbered or...).
