233.0. "APOSTROPHE seems strange in S.R doctype" by ATLAST::BOUKNIGHT (Everything has an outline) Thu Apr 09 1987 14:55

Please forgive me if I missed a discussion of this problem somewhere
else in this notes file. If so, just point me to the appropriate
    answer.

I am using the SOFTWARE.REFERENCE doctype. The problem is the look
of the APOSTROPHE character. It's not positioned in the same manner
as the quotes, but situated about mid-line and appears like its
    fallen down on the page.

Is this the way its support to be?

BL09-06 produced an APOSTROPHE at the proper location, so something
done to the font used in T1.0 has made a big and strange difference.
I haven't been able to run it through POSTSCRIPT to see if its the
    same or different there.

Commas after callouts in software doctypes almost fade away, they are
pushed so close to the callout.

These seem all of a bunch with the underscore squawk in 195.*

In reference to the original note about the apostrophe: What are
you doing to get the apostrophe? If you are simply hitting the
apostrophe (or single quote) character on the keyboard, you'll get
the right character for the apostrophe. If, however, you are using
<single_quote> to get an apostrophe, you will get the character
you describe. This is because the <single_quote> character uses
the apostrophe or single-quote (\char 39) from the 9pt monospaced
(courier) font. These are indeed new fonts for V1.0 and probably
do look different from the old ones.

As for the other comments, we are redoing the underscore and reverse
numerals. They are in fact unacceptable.

Ah ha! That fixed it. Thanks for the answer. It certainly isn't
    an obvious one.
