219.0. "Chinese in DOCUMENT" by HANZI::TONYPOON () Wed Apr 08 1987 06:38

        I am in Far East Local Engineering Group ( Hong Kong ) which is
        responsible for the development of CVMS ( Chinese VMS ) and
        other Chinese-related products. We also support other
        Far East countries such as Korea.

        Our group has been using DOCUMENT for almost a year now, mainly
        for the production of software documentation. However, due to
        our working nature, it is often desirable ( and necessary ) to
        include Chinese in the documents produced.

        Responding to this need we have developed a simple tool layered
        on DOCUMENT which allows the user to enter Chinese ( 1 Chinese
        character is represented by two 8-bit bytes) characters in
        their SDML file through a Chinese terminal and the output from
        DOCUMENT can be printed on LN03. Chinese can be entered as plain
        text or as argument to other tags. Currently the only output
        device supported is LN03.

        This tool actually consists of Chinese tag definitions, Chinese
        font definitions, Chinese fonts, a preprocessor which will
        convert the Chinese characters to the corresponding tag calls and
        a command procedure which ties the components and DOCUMENT together.
        The dimension of the Chinese fonts used is 40 by 40 ( in pixels )
        which is formed by scaling a 24 by 24 Chinese font set.

        If you are interested, you can copy a sample output of this
        tool from

                      HANZI""::SYS$PUBLIC:CDOC_SAMPLE.LN3

        which is a memo containing both English and Chinese. You can
        print this file to LN03 or LN03+ which should have at least 1
        RAM cartridge.

        Questions and commensts are welcome and you can post them by
        replying to this note or by mailing me.

        Regards,

             Tony Poon
