206.0. "Queue names yet again" by COOKIE::JOHNSTON () Mon Apr 06 1987 21:37

I know the question of printers and queue names has been discussed
in several other places in this conference. However, I can't the
answer I need via keywords or simply scanning the directory.
There was some discussion of modifying DOC$DESTINATIONS.DAT, and a mention
of an update that would make queue names modifications easy.

1. Is the update available yet?

2. Is it possible to modify *some* file to accept a user-specified queue
    name, thus saving having to type LN03/print=(queue=LN03_xxx).

    I was able to do this with BL06 by modifying my login.com file,
    but it doesn't work in BL07.

We have 6 LN03s set up in a very de-centralized fashion; thus particular
LN03s are more conveniently located to some people than are other LN03s.

Right now the DOCUMENT default is set to \noprint, forcing people to use
the syntax noted in item 2. It's not holding up work, but it is an
irritant as people are ready to view final output by the time they
specify an LN0x destination.

Thanx

    Rose,

    See notes # 152 and 191 for a discussion of editing the file
    DOC$DESTINATIONS.DAT. This is where the names of the default
    print queues are stored.

206.2relief is just an update awayVAXUUM::KOHLBRENNERTue Apr 07 1987 14:2918
    The field test update kit will allow multiple Line printers,
    ln03s, lps40s and for internal folks, ln01s.

    If you indicate that you want support for a device, say LN03,
    the installation command file will ask you for PAIRS of names,
    the first being the destination name that you would like to use
    on the DOCUMENT command line and the second being the queue name
    that you want associated with that destination name. In addition,
    it will ask you for any special qualifiers that you want to
    associate with each queue name. It stays in a loop asking
    for destination name, queue name and qualifier string over and over,
    until you say enough.

    It will also let you install the LN03 and Ln01 fonts on a remote
    node.

Also, remember that the queue names can be redirected on a user by
user basis by having the user's LOGIN.COM file define a logical
name that is identical to the installed queue name and the
equivalence name be the name of the queue they want their documents
printed on. In other words, if you chose a queue name of LN03 at
installation time, have the users place:

$ DEFINE LN03 some-queue-name

where some-queue-name is the queue they want their output to show up on,
in their LOGIN.COM file.
