179.0. "Help with error messages, pls" by PICA::GREENBERG () Wed Apr 01 1987 11:46
Hi,
Could someone help me diagnose the following error messages? I am building
a book using a profile. The book itself seems to come out alright, but
neither the contents nor index are included when I send the whole .ln3 file
to the printer, although I have included the <contents_file> and <index_file>
tags in my profile.

179.1 | Not fully automatic yet | COOKIE::JOHNSTON | | Wed Apr 01 1987 15:04 | 25 |
| Are you taking through each of the three steps described in the Release
Notes? The notes state that CONTENTS and INDEX are not yet fully
automatic. You must process a file containing <CONTENTS_FILE> and/or
<INDEX_FILE> as follows:
$ DOC/CONTENTS/INDEX/NODEVICE filespec_pro doctype destination
^^^^^^^^
$ DOC/NOTAG/NODEVICE filespec_pro_CONTENTS doctype destination
^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^
$ DOC/NOTAG/NODEVICE filespec_pro_INDEX doctype destination
^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^
$ DOC/NOTAG/NOTEXT filespec_pro doctype destination
^^^^^ ^^^^^^
You will see "contents generation" and "index generation" messages at
the first step, but the .TEX files generated must be processed through
DOCUMENT, same as in BL06.

179.2 | What the Error Messages Mean | VAXUUM::DYER | Adventures in Success | Wed Apr 01 1987 15:26 | 8 |
| Those error messages mean that your page prefix is too long. The limit of a
page prefix is ~6 characters. For example, if you were trying to use the
word "GLOSSARY" as a prefix, it's truncated to "GLOSSA."
Of course, the error message doesn't tell you this. That's been fixed for FT
update. The limit on page prefixes has been upped to 8 characters and they
will be able to use lowercase and multinational characters.

179.3 | DOC$INDEX? | PICA::GREENBERG | | Wed Apr 01 1987 18:33 | 9 |

re: .1
Thanks for directing me there. I also was told that there is a
DOC$INDEX command to be used along with the three you mentioned.
But when we try to use it, it is unrecognized. Any hints on this?

179.4 | DOC$INDEXER FILE.INX | UBEAUT::MANDERSON | the wind don't blow..... it sux | Wed Apr 01 1987 20:45 | 13 |
| re .3
At note 63 or 64 is a note I started on indexing problems. Pattie
put me onto the doc$indexer (note the extra ~er). Using this I have
been able to generate indexes.
Unfortunately I am still unable to complete the book build in batch
as DOC$INDEXER won't (for me) run in batch.
