161.0. "MCS support, what will it be?" by HERON::MARSHALL (Chris Marshall N.S.T.C. Valbonne) Fri Mar 27 1987 03:02
I have seen references to multi-national character set support in
the documentation and was wondering what exactly this means. There
are numerous issues with MCS and how special characters are handled.
For example in Swedish the characters , and are considered
to be seperate characters in the alphabet. For sorting purposes
they should appear after Z in the order I have listed them. In
French the diacriticals are generally ignored when sorting so for
example Citron and Citroen should collate identically. Another
problem, if you look at the street index of a map of Barcelona you
will notice that all the LL are listed in seperately from L just
as though LL was a seperate letter following L. Will VAX Document
support these language specific requirements when building indexes?
Changes in the case of letters is also an issue since in French
the diacriticals are generally removed where in other languages
they must be kept or the letters will have changed. Also how do
you uppercase .

| We've been working with the internationalization folks on this. All the issues
you've brought up (and more) are under consideration.
