158.0. "DOCUMENT User's Guide, Chapter 1? Where?" by JAWS::STRYKER (Stew Stryker) Thu Mar 26 1987 12:24

    We just installed the new kit, and I spent mucho paper printing out the
    new manuals. Boy was I surprised to find that the "Introduction to VAX
    DOCUMENT" was missing when I opened the User Guide.

    Any hints as to when this will become available, so that others besides
    myself can start using DOCUMENT? Could it possibly be supplied as a
    small supplement, rather than having to reprint the entire user's
    guide?

    Thanks,

    Stew

158.1Wait for 3 or 4 weeks and it's yours.VAXUUM::CORMANThu Mar 26 1987 12:4320
    The first BIG hint I can give is to read the release notes that
    came out with the Field Test software. The release notes identify
    everything in the docset that is incomplete or incorrect for FT,
    including the missing chapter 1.

    I'm writing chapter 1 right now, along with revising several other
    chapters and appendices of the User's Guide, Part 1. So chap. 1
    just isn't ready yet. It will be in another 3 - 4 weeks. We send the
    docset to production at the end of April. At that time, I could send
    you a copy of the chapter by itself. However, you'd probably be better
    off getting the whole book, since there will be lots of good rewritten
    or new info. in it, including a clarification of processing (which
    includes book and element building, a confusing point for many.)
    I'd advise waiting for the whole thing.

    We'll put a note in this notesfile when the new docset is ready
    for distribution. Look for it toward the end of April.

How about the STEP-BY-STEP manual as an introduction for new users?
158.3VAXUUM::ETZELMikeThu Mar 26 1987 17:0311
	Marty's right. A suggested first book is Step-by-Step: Writing With
    	DOCUMENT. You can copy it from any of the following:

    		CLOSET::USE3$:{sdml.bl7]step_by_step_writing.ln3 or .lno
    		VAXUUM::USE3$:{sdml.bl7]step_by_step_writing.ln3 or .lno
    	        NEWDOC::[sdml.bl7]step_by_step_writing.ln3 or .lno

    	By the way, NEWDOC is again healthy (disk problem), if anyone
    	tried copying files from there during the last week or so.

    What are you asking about the Step-by-Step, Writing with VAX DOCUMENT
    book? Are you suggesting that it be used as introductory material,
    or are you asking when it's going to be available? (It's currently
    available.)
158.5Clarification of the original note...JAWS::STRYKERStew StrykerTue Mar 31 1987 11:529
    My original note simply asked what happened to Chapter 1 of Part
    1 of the User Guide. I have, and have read, the Step-by-Step Guide.
    I can't say what the other responses are referring to.

    I'll patiently wait until the end of April, or thereabouts.

    Thanks,
