148.0. "Installing on VMS 4.2 or VMS 4.3" by VAXUUM::KOHLBRENNER () Tue Mar 24 1987 16:06

One internal site is having trouble installing (topic 112)
and the system is running VMS 4.3. We have installed the
EXTERNAL kit on our own VMS 4.2 system, but we don't know
of anyone who has intalled the INTERNAL kit on a pre-4.4
    version of VMS.

Has anyone installed the INTERNAL kit on VMS 4.2 or VMS 4.3?

I installed the internal kit on DOCO2 yesterday. It is running 4.2. No problems
yet.

I installed the internal kit on a V4.2 cluster that had been previously
running BL6. Had no problems other than the fudging to keep both
baselevels available.

Unfortunately, starting with the field test update, VAX DOCUMENT will
not be installable on anything less than V4.4 systems.

Hopefully, those of you still running V4.2 and V4.3 will take this as that
incentive you've been looking for to switch over to the latest and greatest
version of VMS. If this presents an insurmountable hardship, though, let us
know and we'll see if we can accommodate you once we're done getting the
update out to the general community.

    Brian,

I wholeheartedly support your requirement. I know from past experience
how difficult it is to product development/support across major
    releases of VMS.

However, I'll also be a V4.3 user for another couple of months.
We've a couple of systems with DECmail, and the MTS are just getting
around to supporting V4.4 and above, so V4.3 has been a requirement
for us. I suspect there may be others out there, but I don't know
how many systems support both MTS (DECmail) and DOCUMENT...

    That's life I suppose...
