144.0. "Is there a BL07 PICMODE Trick?" by COOKIE::JOHNSTON () Mon Mar 23 1987 21:08

Does anyone know the trick to using PICMODE in BL07?

I'm trying to get a output file of just the figure before I include the
TeX file into the .GNC file. Under BL06, I used TRUN. TRUN is not
recognized in BL07, and according to the release notes is replaced with
DOCUMENT/NOTAG.

Hence, these are the commands I used:

$ PICMODE filename (creates .TEX file)

$ DOCUMENT/NOTAG filename GENERAL LN03 (supposedly to get final output)

This results in a Tex "undefined control sequence".

I re-tested the file under BL06, and it works fine.

This is all that the .PMD file contains:

    Rose,

    I tried your example and it crashed using document to generate it.
    I use the following and got the printout ok.

    $DOC FILE GENERAL LN03/NOTAG    (Crashed)
    $DOC FILE GENERAL LN03/NOTAG/NOTEX prints out the file ok.

    (And with sof.spe as well.

    $DOC FILE s.s LN03/NOTAG    (Crashed)
    $DOC FILE s.s LN03/NOTAG/NOTEX prints out the file ok.
    )

    For PICMODE generally I have found that including within book builds
    will not crash and produces output ok. It can take a while to get the
    PICMODE sizing ok so it wont crash (within book builds) but then all
    is fine.

144.2Still having problems...COOKIE::JOHNSTONWed Mar 25 1987 16:3854
I'm still having problems...and going nuts trying to figure it out.
I'm wondering if my PICMODE.EXE file is corrupted or something?

I started with a clean directory, containing only the .PMD file.
Based on the reply in .1, I tried this:

$ PICMODE TEST_FILE This created a .TeX file

$ DOC TEST_FILE GENERAL LN03/NOTAG/NOTEX

                                  This resulted in "can't find
                                  TEST_FILE.DVI_LN3"

I tried this with an "old" .PMD file to start with. Then I tried it with the
file I entered into this notes file in .0. Then I tried it with a newly
created .PMD file that contained nothing but 2 "boxes" and an "arrow", drawn
with +, -, v, and #.

Is there anything different that you did (note .1), no matter how seemingly
insignificant?

I searched all my directories on the off-chance that something was
causing the .DVI file to be copied into another directory. No such luck.

I then asked an innocent bystander to try it. No such luck.

And trying DOCUMENT with only the \notag results in "undefined control
sequence".

I am using PICMODE 1.0; I'm assuming there are no versions more current than
this?

Any guesses on other things I could check out?

I'm running a parallel system here--BL06 and BL07. As noted in .0, the files
still execute fine under BL06. I know that PICMODE is not supported; but is
it possible something, somewhere in the BL07 DOCTOOLS file(s) is making me
loony?

Help! I've become a hapless victim! It's important to get this working
because I don't want a bunch of spec-writing engineers in my office giving me
grief that it doesn't work--and they will!

Thanx for your time, anyone, someone.

Trying to head off the herd...

144.3try this....UBEAUT::MANDERSONthe wind don't blow..... it suxWed Mar 25 1987 18:4619
    Rose,

    I used the following to compile it ok.

    $ PICMODE filename.pmd
    $ DOC filename S.S LN03/NOTAG
    $ DOC filename S.S LN03/NOTAG/NOTEX

    The first DOC pass usually fails with funny errors, I don't
    worry and just give it the second pass. Although it fails it still
    generates the filename.DVI_LN3 file that the /notex pass needs.

    The other way to get it is to have a filename.GNC file with the
    line <INCLUDE_TEX_FILE>(FILENAME.TEX) only. This will usually pass right
    through OK.

    Hope this helps

What are the "funny errors" that occur during the first pass?

144.5A control sequence errorUBEAUT::MANDERSONthe wind don&#039;t blow..... it suxThu Mar 26 1987 02:4618
    The errors are as indicated in this extract from a log file. This
    is the first time I have investigated this particular error. I put it
    thru' a second pass, the output looks fine and since they do not
    appear with an <include_tex_file>(xyz.tex) I haven't thought twice.

The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

Thanx much, Kevin; a thousand blessings on your children, born and
unborn.Finally got it to work. Now to work on a .com file that will mask
the annoying error messages, and continue processing when they are
encountered, if that's possible. If I come up with something, I'll
post it here.

144.7TeX, meet DECTeXCLOSET::SEGALThu Mar 26 1987 13:326
    Bet the .TEX file created by itself has no \begintexinput at the
    start of the file, hence the error report from TeX. That would
    probably explain why there aren't complaints when the file is
    run using <include_tex_file>.

144.9I'm having trouble, too... HELP!CHAPLN::ROSENTHALOut to break Murphy&#039;s Law!Thu May 07 1987 16:33132
    Here's the situation I'm in, and I can't figure out what to do.

    Picture file:        CH_ROPEN_100.PMD

    Processed
    with PICMODE:        CH_ROPEN_100.PMD

    The .GNC file:       CH_ROPEN.GNC

    Inside the .GNC file:

    <display>(wide\MAXIMUM)
    <enddisplay>

    	    <condition>(line_printer)
	    <line_art>
	    <include>(CH_ROPEN_100.pmd)
	    <endline_art>
	    <endcondition>
	    <condition>(laser_printer)
	    <include_tex_file>(CH_ROPEN_100.tex)
	    <endcondition>

    I've tried passing the command <SET_CONDITION>(Laser_Printer) at
    the the very beginning of the .GNC file and it doesn't work.

    I've tried the command line:

    $ DOCUMENT CH_ROPEN SOFTWARE.REFERENCE LN03

    That didn't compile properly (.LIS file follows...)

    I've tried taking the <SET_CONDITION> command out of the
    .GNC file and passing it on the command line, as in:

    $ DOCUMENT CH_ROPEN SOFTWARE.REFERENCE LN03 /CONDITION=LASER_PRINTER

    Still, no go.

    This is the content of the CH_ROPEN_100.PMD file (it's wide, so
    that's why it's running off the right gutter). My picture files

I did not run a test file using all the information you provided, but
based on the SDML tags you showed it looks like:

1. You used the tag <line_art> outside the context of
   <figure>/<endfigure>

2. You've asked DOCUMENT to look for a .TEX.TEX file because
    you used <include_tex_file>(CH_ROPEN_100.TEX).  The default
    is to look for a .TEX file, so you should specify
    <INCLUDE_TEX_FILE>(CH_ROPEN_100).

If your file still doesn't process, you should double-check that you
can get a picmode.LN3 file separate from a .GNC file. Here's the .COM
file that I use (you have to change the queue-name):

$ PICMODE 'P1'
$ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT "  "
$ DOCUMENT/NOTAG 'P1' GENERAL LN03/NOPRINT/NOLOG
$ DOCUMENT/NOTAG/NOTEXT/NOLOG 'P1' GENERAL LN03/PRINT=(QUEUE=LN03_N23,NOTIFY)
$ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT "  "
$ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT "Ignore the notice of TeX errors you just received."
$ WRITE SYS$OUTPUT "The file has been sent to the printer."
$ EXIT

    Rose,

    A zillion thank yous!!!! I removed exactly the things you
    suggested and the darned thing compiled... I won't tell you
    how much time I wasted last Thursday scratching my head,
    trying to figure out what I'd done... it makes me crazy to
    realize the answer was staring me right in the face...
    sigh...

    Thanks again!

Donna,

You're welcome! My only regret is that I couldn't have spared you some
pain sooner. I lost almost 3 days trying to figure out that the picmode
file had to be processed through DOCUMENT twice. (Thanx to Kevin
Manderson for coming to *my* rescue on that one!) And that wasn't
really bright of me to spend so much time and energy on it. I've since
decided to spend an hour on something, then post a note. Chances are
very good that someone else has already run into the same problem.

Rose
