I have problems getting indexing to work. I have a project plan (that I have been working on for several months) broken into several chapters and appendicies. Using DOC PROJPLAN SOF.SPE LN03/CONT/INDEX/NODEV I get a contents but no index (comes up with a file not found during the tex generation) If I edit the profile so either all chapters or all appendicies then the index generation is ok. I am working on isolating what is causing the problem however the document takes about 40 mins, on our microvax, to compile and will take a little time. Has anybody else come up with something with similar effects. As I get more information I will put it in here - meanwhile to start the ball rolling.... Regards Kevin M

Could you be a little more specific about the problem? I will try to duplicate, but if I can't I may need to look at the files. patti

This is the log file for a .com file used in batch. (edited for relevance and readability). The file it can't find is the ~.brn one. Today I ran a reduced version of the .com (including the files with an * below) without problems. Is it because the vax document user guide part 1 ft test draft pp13-239 reads ...Main entry <subentry>subentry... but should read as per pp9-6 of the same volume <X>(file structure designators<XSUBENTRY>See also header Blocks) (Ed services here in the Springs pointed this out) regards ---gic

I don't think the <xsubentry> is the problem as I am not using it (unless that is the problem....) All the entries are <X>(whatever) Putting in all the <xsubentry>(???) will be part of my next editing sessions. What has hasn't made indexing so far. [9 ch + 2 appendix includes .tex throughout] no go [9 ch no appendix still includes .tex ] no go [7 ch no appendix still includes .tex ] ok The chapters removed included tables (as do many other chapters - although they are a bit bigger) but nothing else different. Still trying to isolate it. Kevin m
64.6 | not appendices but still happening. | UBEAUT::MANDERSON | the wind don't blow..... it sux | Fri Mar 13 1987 07:59 | 34 |
I have eliminated appendices as the problem. I made the appendices into chapters and still no index - same error as before. (Incidentaly a second person here is having a similar no index problem on a different book.) After a talk around here the possibility of <table> constraints in a single <element> arose. So I have just finished editing one of the (old) appendices into 5 new smaller appendices - each one table only. Kicked it off and got the following error. I looked at the file - couldn't see anything wrong so kicked off again. Same error. Commented it out in the <profile> and then the next <element> caused the same error. I can't find this error in the manual so have no idea what it represents. %TAG-I-USER_IMSG, Staffing and contacts being processed Line is 2 of file CH_STAFF.GNC %TAG-I-USER_IMSG, Forms being processed Line is 2 of file CH_FORMS.GNC %TAG-I-USER_IMSG, Results tables - lifting -being processed Line is 2 of file CH_RESULTS_LIFT.GNC %TAG-I-USER_IMSG, Results tables - super -being processed Line is 2 of file CH_RESULTS_SUPER.GNC %PAS-F-VARINDVAL, varying index value is greater than current length MANDERSON job terminated at 13-MAR-1987 23:36:46.88 There are still no <xsubentry>'s (tried them, got the above error and took them out till I get it going). regards Kevin M

re PAS-VARINDVAL in .6 This was caused by a <comment>( that was not terminated occurring in an <element> of a <profile>. (these were in the appendix files, I assume in the attempt to not use appendixes because of the index problems...) Now am working on the original problem of index entries... pa

re .9. Thanks Patti. Fixed that problem. Have something more for you though. Well in trying different things to find this indexing problem I figured I would kick of a (big) batch job consisting of 13 passes of the bookbuild. Each pass would have a different chapter <comment>'ed out to see if 'this' one was causing the problems. It didn't - however another problem arose that may(not) be related. On pass 10 ACP gave an error as unable to find DECLOGO. All subsequent passes suffered the same error. I have checked and DECLOGO is still there. I edited the batch log (readability and relevance) and it follows the page break. Hope this helps. 64.11 | Can't run Index from a logical | CLOSUS::AMEND | Tue Apr 21 1987 15:33 | 23
I am not sure whether you fixed the problem with finding the .brn file or not. I found the problem in mine and I think you have the same problem. I have defined in my login.com the following command: $ define my_disk wrkd5$ I have a .com procedure that says $ set def my_disk:[amend.whaterver] When I log on and say set def [amend.whatever] I have no troubles with index. However, if I move around and say $ set def my_disk:[amend.whatever] I get a .br instead of a .brn file when I run index. I noticed that the logical on the first note was there and not an actual. jim amend 8625::amend 522-2351

Bless you a thousand times! I have finally (I think we've been at this for almost a year, off and on) been able to reproduce the problem on our base level 7. Using the same command sequence, the problem does *not* occur on the development base level, which means, I think, that we've done it ! (The problem was not resetting the buffer length for the filename when a logical name is in the file-spec string.) -patti
64.13 | .brn file not found | DELNI::COLELLO | Mon Jun 29 1987 10:33 | 16
One of the writers here cannot produce an index even on a single chapter. The index entries are coded correctly as far as I can see. We get a similiar error as mentioned above " can't find .brn file " but the wierd thing is that the file spec gets truncated. Example: The file is called 2222c3.gnc and when the /index qualifier is used it can't find the same 2222c3.brn file, instead it creates a 22.brn. and when I ran it on the profile: it created a 2222.brn from the 2222igpro.gnc file. So it looks like it's chopping off 4 chars to the left of the .???? That's the only problem I've seen so far. I've been running and producing indexes fine. I looked in her login.com, but am not sure what I should be looking for... any ideas? Bette JEan

The answer is in .11 and .12; this was a bug that persisted through BL7, but I've had no reports of problems on BL8 systems. patti |
