>- Where have all the Umlauts gone -< Although characters from Digital's multinational character set, like German Umlaut-characters, are recognised and printed correctly in normal text environments, they obviously cannot be used in index-entries. Example: [ I n d e x G e n e r a t i o n ]... INXtoBRN Version T1.0 %DOC-I-IDENT, DOCINDEX version X1.00 %DOC-I-PROCFILE, processing file 'DISK1$WORK:[FRANKE.DOCUMENT]TEST4.BRN;1' %DOC-S-COMPLETE, processing complete 'DISK1$WORK:[FRANKE.DOCUMENT]TEST4.BRN;1' %DOC-W-CTRLCHAR, the following line contains control characters - ignored %DOC-I-TEXT_IS, entry text: 'H^$kelverein>gr^<^en des' %DOC-S-CREATED, 'DISK1$WORK:[FRANKE.DOCUMENT]TEST4_INDEX.TEX;5' created Is this a feature? From the release notes for T1.0... o The indexing software does not recognize multinational characters in in index strings. The strings will be converted to blanks. Joe
59.2 | still no solution for Umlaute | PAULUS::FRANKE | Thu Mar 05 1987 09:15 | 15
>- problem explained, but not not solved -< Well, Joe, it might be in the release notes, but it sure doesn't solve the problem. There are, besides English, other languages which use special characters. Do you suggest that words with special characters should not be used when writing manuals in local language? Another problem: Special characters in chapter titles are not converted to uppercase. I guess the explanation it is in the release notes, but will there be a solution sometime? Lothar

What I'm suggesting is an answer to your problem. The reference in 59.1 falls under the category of "Items not available for Field Test." The first page of the release notes states: "This document contains the following. o A list of all software and documentation items not supplied for Field Test that will be present for the Field Test Update." As I read it, that means the problem you cited in 59.0 will be fixed with the Field Test Update.

Joe is correct. The deficiencies were noted specifically because they are not *yet* supported, but will be. patti anklam |
