1337.0. "Personal Oracle Competitive Presentation" by SWAM2::SOTO_RU () Mon Mar 07 1994 05:17

    I have created a Powerpoint presentation that I may have to give which
    contains some bare-knuckle shots at Oracle, summarizes Rdb advantages,
    and also summarizes Alpha AXP, DEC OSF/1 and OpenVMS.

    It is not highly original, some material was obtained from existing Rdb
    presentation material, some old Mike Booth material (it was accurate
    then but I don't know about now so feedback would be welcomed) and some
    from tidbits that I've come across in my Enet/Notes perusal. This is
    not a presentation for those unwilling to engage in a real knockdown,
    dragout encounter with your local Oracle 'partner'.

    I've also created an Excel spreadsheet with Cynthia Therrien's DB
    Features/Functions Grid with updates. Only Rdb and Oracle are in this
    one.

    Now if someone in Rdb or PS marketing can point to a public area where
    I may deposit this, it will be my pleasure. If there is no interest,
    I'll understand.

    regards,
    Ruben

    I have deposited this presentation as well as other competitive
    material I had developed sometime ago for an RFP in a public area.
    Anyone who wishes a copy, just grab it. The presentation is in a
    self-extracting ZIP file (just execute the file on your PC) to save
    space and transfer time.

    The address is

    CWOPCA::SYS$PUBLIC CWOPCA is DECnet address 16.287

    BTW:

    We won that bid (against HP and Informix).

    As more stuff gets developed, I'll place it there so feel free to
    peruse it regularly.

    regards,
    Ruben

    Any problems, send me mail.
1337.2Clarification to previous note..SWAM2::SOTO_RUTue Mar 08 1994 19:547
    BTW:

    The .DOC files in this public area are DECwrite files, not MS-Word.
    Sorry for any inconvenience.

    regards,
    Ruben
1337.3One more Alpha, OpenVMS, OSF/1, Rdb presentationSWAM2::SOTO_RUThu Mar 31 1994 20:2629
    Just gave a 'toned-down' version of the .PPT presentation described in
    .0. Major difference is the direct Oracle shots I had written in the
    .PPT, although I verbally used them during the presentation.

    The basic audience was unfamiliar with Rdb, had heard all of the Oracle
    marketing BS, was kinda inclined that way but were hesitant due to
    Oracle's steep pricing. After the presentation, the followup session
    questions were all Rdb related. Of course, they could've assumed I
    didn't know anything about Oracle and was therefore fruitless to ask
    about that (pretty astutue on their part).

    I was there supporting Ross Systems. The guy from Ross (their technical
    equivalent) was very, very supportive of Rdb and was not hesitant to
    describe Ross application performance differences beyween the two dbs.
    He let it be known that the reason Ross did certain things at the
    application level was to accomodate features lacking in Oracle, Ingres,
    but which exist in Rdb (design to the lowest common denominator
    theory). Couldn't tell you what they were since I was concentrating on
    the next major Rdb feature ( and Oracle 'slam') so I ignored the
    details. The client seemed to like the idea of Rdb as a real Production
    System db (helps to explain what the characteristics of a PS is before
    you engage in this conversation) even though the application is a
    finance package.

    Anyway, I'll be placing this .PPT in the CWOPCA public area. The name
    is STJOE2.PPT.

    regards,
    Ruben
1337.4SW versions for the files...SWAM2::SOTO_RUMon Apr 11 1994 20:3813
    Has anyone had problems copying the .EXE files to their PC and
    Unzipping them?

    Some data:

    The files in the .EXE file are in either Word-For-Win 2.0c, Excel 4.0a,
    or Powerpoint 3.0. The Zipping program is version 2.04g from PKWARE.

    These are the versions of the programs you'll need to unzip and then
    use the files.

    regards,
    Ruben
1337.5Files recopied to public area...SWAM2::SOTO_RUTue Apr 12 1994 20:039
    I've recopied the file

    STJOE2.EXE to CWOPCA::SYS$PUBLIC:

    I've also copied the two .PPT files in that self-extracting executable
    (STJOE2.PPT and STJOERDB.PPT).

    regards,
    Ruben
1337.6Node CWOPCA unavailabilitySWAM2::SOTO_RUFri Jun 17 1994 07:0012
    Node CWOPCA has gone offline as of May 20, 1994. The system was
    shutdown in the move from the Costa Mesa, CA to the Irvine facility.
    There are no plans to resurrect this node as the new group I was
    assigned to has its own server which i use (and now don't have to
    manage).

    I have many of the files on floppies and as soon as I can arrange a
    home on the new server, I will post it here. Please be patient with me
    if you have dire need of this stuff.

    regards,
    Ruben

I'd like to see them.
