JOINT ANNOUNCEMENT BY DIGITAL AND MICROSOFT

On December 9, 1993, Digital representatives will be in the Microsoft booth
at Database World - Client/Server World in Chicago to participate in
announcing the upcoming availability (end of January 1994) of the Windows
NT version of the Microsoft SQL Server Family of Products on RISC-based
systems (including Alpha AXP). Although other RISC-based systems will be
mentioned, Digital will be the only vendor physically participating with
 Microsoft in the announcement.

Microsoft SQL Server Family of Products:

When tightly integrated with Windows NT, the Microsoft SQL Server Family of
Products allows customers to create, install, deploy, use, and manage
 line-of-business solutions within a unified client-server architecture.
With the Microsoft SQL Server Family of Products, individuals using various
SQL clients (desktop software) can more easily work with diverse data and
information bases; the IS manager can create necessary client/server
applications and can maintain better control of the security, integrity,
and usability of data and information; and the system manager can monitor
and tune performance of systems and processes within the network.

Optimized for Multi-precessing capabilities of Windows NT:

The Microsoft SQL Server Family of Products is optimized to exploit the
multi-processing capabilities of Windows NT. Digital, however, will not be
announcing multi-processing Alpha AXP systems at this time (beta systems
were shown at Comdex and may be shown at the Chicago announcement). No
final SQL on Alpha AXP performance information is currently available for
 disclosure to customers.

Digital will announce its SMP versions of Alpha AXP systems in Q3 FY94.
Therefore, when the Microsoft SQL Server Family of products begins shipping
in January 1994, customers should consider using single processor Alpha AXP
systems for their initial evaluation and pilot platforms.

 EXCERPT FROM THE PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT:

Microsoft Announces SQL Server Family Availability for
                      DEC Alpha AXP Hardware Platforms

New Line of Products for RISC-based Systems
Provides Powerful New Performance Options for Customers

CHICAGO -- December 9, 1993 -- Microsoft announced today at Database World
 - Client/Server World that the core components of its distributed client-
server database product family, Microsoft SQL Server, Open Data Services
programmable gateway, Microsoft SQL Server Programmer's Toolkit, and visual
database administration tools, are scheduled to be available next month for
the Digital Equipment Corporation's Alpha AXP RISC-based platforms running
the Microsoft Windows NT operating system.

With this release, Microsoft SQL Server will become the first major
parallel processing relational database management system (RDBMS) to be
available across the entire range of hardware platforms supported by
Windows NT. Microsoft has been shipping SQL Server for Windows NT and
 related products for single-processor and multi-processor Intel-based
 systems since September 1993.

"The availability of Microsoft SQL Server on the Alpha AXP platform is a
great example of Digital's commitment to open client-server computing,"
said Jesse Lipcon, vice president of systems marketing at Digital. "For
the first time corporate customers will have the necessary performance at
attractive prices to make widespread deployment of networked PC database
solutions truly feasible. And, Digital's extensive training, support, and
applications, and re-engineering services for Windwows NT can help take the
risk out of these deployment projects."

According to Rich Taylor, system manager for United Technologies Chemical
Systems Division, "By running the Windows NT operating system on a DECpc
AXP 150, our financial department completed a project in just two months --
a project that was budgeted for two years of development in a mainframe
environment. With Microsoft SQL Server creating a true client-server
environment, we anticipate even greater productivity gains. The financial
department has been able to generate information that was previously
 inaccessible to them."
