| Rdb has in excess of 40,000 licenses.
I don't know what the other vendors have.
DB2 doesn't have that many licenses though they are for larger systems.
The dollar value of DB2 sales is (according to the latest I've seen) the
same as that of Oracle sales. Others place the DB2 sales much higher.

| re -2:
And what types of licences are these (development, interactive, RT).
In the old days we used to fight Oracle for having licence metrics that
were useless. If these 40.000 include all NAS 250 and above licences,
why not count all VMS licences?
Playing devils advocate of course,

Well, this number appeared in the latest issue of Digital News and
Review, so it's fairly safe to quote it externall :-)

1295.5 | 40,000 "revenue units" | NOVA::BERENSON | Database Architecture, Standards, and Strategy | Wed Sep 29 1993 19:01 | 17 |
| That number includes all licenses for which Digital has received revenue.
It does not include licenses packaged with the old VMS license (QL001 if
I recall) since Digital did not receive revenue for them (VMS' price wasn't
raised when Rdb run-time was packaged, and DBS was never credited for any
revenue or license count).
That means it does include current NAS 300 (?) package licenses.
There are probably tens of thousands more systems actually using Rdb then
show up in the number because there is little way to reliably tell if
QL001 purchasers are using it or not. The 40,000 number no doubt
includes some people who are not currently using Rdb as well.
The bottom line is that Digital has received revenue for 40,000 copies of
Rdb.
