1277.0. "corporate db ad's don't mention Rdb AGAIN" by BRSDVP::ALLEMEERSCH (In Flanders fields ...) Thu Aug 12 1993 18:41

TO GARETH TAUBE, MANAGER DATABASE PARTNERS PROGRAM
and all people responsable for corporate database advertisements

Consider:

DEC Professional vol.12 no. 8 august 1993 p. 34
'The choice is yours. When it comes to database technology, Digital
provides you with freedom to choose'

As a CSC person supporting Rdb daily now for almost 5 years, I just
wanted to let you know how ANGRY AND UPSET I am, noting that once again
Rdb is not even mentioned in an ad, except for the cartoon.

It makes me and my colleagues wonder if

1) the company Digital really wants to sell Rdb, or is this revenue
   considered peanuts ?

2) does Digital want to convince the market that we do NOT have a
   database product ?

I hope you realize that this is as if you were laughing at the face of all
people who daily struggle very hard to help make Rdb the excellent product
IT IS.

1277.1You're either a commodity or an anachronismMSDOA::SECRISTBehind the eight ball.Thu Aug 12 1993 19:3219
Unfortunately the question is not whether we have the world's
leading high-performance, robust, quality database for production
systems... it's simply whether Digital gets the money or not.

If we could focus customers on safe decisions that will get the
work done instead of amorphous, vendor-neutral "open systems"
the decision to go with Rdb would be a no-brainer. Unfortunately
since we now sell more PCs in this country than cars, the flood of
technically unsophisticated neophytes into our industry is sending
us awash in a sea of drivel and hype. No one will introduce anything
new for want of "clear industry standards," which plays right into
Microsoft's hands since anything they do is a "sure thing."

In the 90s, you're either a commodity or you're nothing.

So, has anybody actually sent anything like .0 to Gareth Taube? If
so, have you received a response?

Another thought - do you think anybody would get the message if Rdb
contacted the Database Partners Program and asked to join?

Do you think Gareth Taube has any reason to promote Rdb? It seems that
the (Third Party) Database Partners Program office is specifically
geared for non-Digital databases (and seemingly biased towards those
that run on UNIX). Maybe when Rdb is hipping a production version on
OSF/1 they will be interested. And then again, maybe not!

All in all, it's a shame they have money for marketing while we cripple
our own database group in that area.

It's a similar story in the performance space. Third party db's get
plenty of time on our machines to do performance testing (and the time
on these huge configurations costs a LOT), while the performance group
working on Rdb performance gets much less time on them.

Rdb has the entire Production Systems Marketing, Product Management and
Engineering resources behind it, and ALL the 3rd parties have a single
small program office behind them. What I hear is a commentary on the
    effectiveness of each resource pool.

Don't give me this small program office nonsense. To the same extent
that Rdb has the "Production Systems" PM&M resources going to bat for it,
The third parties have all the marketing muscle of the entire ALPHA
marketing group and CSG engineering behind them.

But Mark is right on one point, ever since Database Marketing was
dissolved and the remnants shuffled from one new PM&M group to another,
its effectiveness has been nil. Rose Ann Giordano is the person who has
to fix that.

Just wanted to let you know that, being part of the 'final solution',
I am still with Rdb knocking in the trenches, and happy to do so.
