1251.0. "Heads-Up: ORACLE win at USWEST / Time-Warner Cable" by ACESMK::RLEE () Tue May 25 1993 09:55
Just noted this in "Variety", dated May 17, 1993:
USWEST has signed with Oracle Corporation for the really, really, big
project of providing real-time interactive TP/DB support for the
Time-Warner Cable / USWEST interactive vable TV Services system.
I'm adding this note here to get some SI drivers prepped to take over
the USWEST / Time Warner account when and if Oracle falls flat on their
face.
Rough guess for the choice of Oracle was the installed UNIX System 5
base at USWEST, but I wouldn't swear by this - since UNIX System 5
on the Western Electric 32-bit processors can't possibly be ready to
pump live video selections out of an Oracle database to 100s of
thousands of phone/cable/fiberoptic subscribers.
Anyway, just wanted SI drivers to know that the first billion or so
on this project will be in Oracle's hot little hands -- unless we get
smart and start knocking on or kicking in doors.

1251.1 | Oracle8 | TPSYS::SHAH | Amitabh "Drink DECAF: Commit Sacrilege" | Tue May 25 1993 20:36 | 3 |
| This week's Open Systems Today describes the features/functionalities
announced for Oracle8; apparently the USWest deal will be the major
driver for Oracle8 development.
