REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oracle Corporation today
announced the appointment of former Executive Vice President and
President of the transportation sector at Hughes Aircraft Company
James Abrahamson as chairman of the board of directors. Upon
election to the board by the stockholders, Abrahamson will assume the
position of chairman, joining current Chairman, President and Chief
Executive Officer Lawrence J. Ellison in the newly created Office of
the Chairman.
Additionally, the company announced a new executive committee
chartered with formulating the company's strategic direction and
overseeing the company's worldwide operations. The committee consists
of Abrahamson; Ellison; Ray Lane, president, Oracle USA; Geoff Squire,
chief executive, international operations and Jeff Henley, executive
vice president and chief financial officer.
``Over the last two years Oracle has made a concerted effort to
bring in proven, senior management,'' said Ellison. ``Through the
office of the chairman, Jim Abrahamson will help provide the leadership
and strategic direction that will enable Oracle to become a
multi-billion dollar company.''
Abrahamson, 59, spent 33 years in the United States Air Force
rising to the rank of Lt. General. During his Air Force career, he
directed the development of several spacecraft, a missile program, the
F-16 International Fighter program, and was in charge of NASA's Space
Shuttle program from 1981 until 1984. In 1984 President Reagan asked
him to direct the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), the largest and
most complex research and development effort ever undertaken in American
history. Abrahamson directed SDI from April 1984 until his retirement
from the Air Force in March 1989.
Following his retirement from the Air Force, Abrahamson served as
executive vice president for corporate development, then president of
the transportation sector for Hughes Aircraft Company from October 1989

to September 1992. He served on the Hughes board of directors and its
executive committee and as a member of the policy board. His
operational responsibilities included Hughes' automotive business with
its parent company, General Motors, and with other automotive
companies worldwide. Additionally, Abrahamson was responsible for a
variety of automotive products and related environmental,
manufacturing and training businesses, as well as systems engineering
and research projects for General Motors.
``For the last two years it has been one of my primary objectives to
recruit a full-time chairman for Oracle,'' said Ellison. ``During the
two years that I have known Jim I have worked to persuade him to join
Oracle. His intelligence, technical aptitude and leadership skills
make him the ideal person to help lead Oracle.''
``As I've watched the dramatic change in information technology
in the last five years, I am convinced that Oracle is one of only a
handful of companies that can provide broad based information
management solutions,'' said Abrahamson. ``My initial focus at
Oracle will be to assist Larry in strategic planning and helping the
company work with large businesses and manufacturing enterprises.''

News Article: GEOFF SQUIRE STEPS DOWN FROM ORACLE
23-NOV-1993 Length: 17 lines Businesswire
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oracle Corp. today announced
that Geoff Squire, former chief executive of Oracle's International
Operations, is no longer with the company. This management change
occurred in connection with Oracle's recently announced unification of
its Domestic and International Operations into one worldwide
organization. As a result of the unification, Mr. Squire left the
chief executive position on October 28 of this year to work on new
business opportunities for Oracle. With today's announcement, those
plans have been abandoned.
Mr. Squire leaves Oracle after nine years. "Geoff led the
development of our international business to its current level of
revenue and played a significant role in the leadership of the
corporation," said Oracle president and CEO Larry Ellison. "We are
grateful for the contributions Geoff made and wish him well in his new
endeavors."
