Hi, a customer is looking for a new database & software development environment. They have a project in mind and would like to develop and then run applications under MS-Windows. They want client/server, where the server might also be VMS (good news for Rdb) as functionality is more important than the VMS/U*ix battle. Maybe we can switch the development platform to workstations. As a DEC solution I considered DEC Rally or TFM. But Rally-RT/windows won't be available in time, TFM is not integrated with anything else of our product suite (at lest not yet, Rdb/ACMS are to come, but when ?) (cross-posted in TFM-notes conference) Which other tools would you recommend ? Uniface (runs with Rdb ?). They plan to have ca. 100 PCs geographically distributed, accessing the database (not today but later...). Thanks for any help, /Andreas

1177.1 | What about ACMS Desktop? | BALDIE::GREER | Rusty Greer, Atlanta TPRC, DTN 385-7267 | Wed Aug 05 1992 17:09 | 21 |
We have sold the following computing environment to several accounts: (1) Users all run MS-WINDOWS (2) Updates to the database are developed using Visual Basic, ACMS Desktop, COBOL (or C), Rdb (3) Queries of the database are done by users running DECquery and, in some cases, DECreport We are recommending (no projects have gotten to this stage yet) that high-volume queries be developed using VB/ACMS Desktop/COBOL/Rdb (due to performance and server load considerations). The above gives you several options. Obviously some development will be done outside the MS-WINDOWS arena, but (1) all run-time will be MS-WINDOWS, and (2) depending upon how you use VB/ACMS Desktop (i.e., do you keep business logic on the PC in VB or on the server in COBOL/C), a majority of your develop- ment will also be in an MS-WINDOWS environment. Not sure this helps. Rusty.

For "low-volume" access, we do have an asset that provides SQL-SERVICES for Visual Basic.

and DEC Rally can sit onthe PC and access Rdb/VMS through SQl/Services. Simon |
