1152.0. "ROLODEC anyone?" by CSC32::S_MAUFE (think of it as a precise estimate) Wed May 20 1992 21:45

Has anybody heard of something called ROLODEC?

My customer got a letter from Digital offering a demo tape that
contained ROLODEC, an office application based on rdb.

She'd like to find out some more before sending off for the demo.

I've left a message with Brian Dugglesby who signed the letter
    accompanying the offer.

    thanx ! Simon

well, to answer my own question its a rolodex that keeps its
    information in an rdb database.

Supposedly you can store company phone numbers and address etc in it,
and pull the details up at will.

My customer wants to use for the switchboard, to help the operators
find peopls extension. She is off to order the demo 8-)

Brian Dugglesby told me the above, thanx Brian! He hopes to have it on
    the net soon.

Rolodec was the brainchild of Evan Bauer @NYO I believe.

The concept is to provide the customer with a useful tool that they can actually
use to learn more about Rally and Rdb. The demo was previewed at the DB/TP
Symposium in January back in Nashua.

It seem to receive positive feedback by the group and I think it's a neat idea
to get customers up and running with something that could be useful to them.

Evan was trying to work with Marie Murphy (I think) to coordinate this demo
tool with a mass mailing targeted at VAX RMS users. Sounds like it's happening
now.

    Rick,

You are correct. Evan Bauer developed the ROLODEC demo as a
fulfillment to our direct mail campaign as Brian states in the
following memo. We hope to place a pointer to the demo next week for
your use and review. The idea is that you can familiarize yourself
with it or demo it to your customer and sales team.

The demo will find a home in the public directory. Stay tuned...

    Regards,

The Rolodec) demo is part of our current direct mail campaign.
It is directed to VAX installed base (of which we estimate 60% do not have
a relational database). The idea is to encourage them to upgrade from RMS
to Rdb. The direct mail is based on a well-known customer who currently
uses Rdb (Toys R Us) to track inventory throughout their stores.

As fulfillment we are offering a book "Migrating Applications from RMS to
Rdb" as well as a demo which can be easily installed (Rolodec) and gives
the customer a sample of the power of Rdb. Evan Bauer co-wrote with Phil
Naecker, an outside consultant.Evan also developed the demo which is
essentially a rolodex application for customers to get the taste and feel
of Rdb. It is easy to demo and run.

This campaign consists of two mailings: The first is the Barbie mailer and
the second uses the Hotwheels (toy cars) and follows about two weeks after
the first mailer.

The demo will be put in a public directory (Bob can you add detail here)
and be accessed by customers or salesreps......etc.etc.

Hard copies of the book are currently being printed and can be ordered using
the part number EC-L5819-58 in about 2 weeks.

We plan on running this campaign extensively over the next 4-5 months.
