1148.0. "Oracle and Charles Rivers" by FHOPAS::BREWMN::BREWIS () Wed May 13 1992 23:26

Can anyone provide information on what Charles Rivers and Associates brings
to the table for VAX-based ORACLE systems?

Ford has lots (I said lots) of ORACLE databases and applications on many
different VAXes. They are currently evaluating some PC-based solution from
Charles Rivers to address the performance concerns that Ford has about ORACLE
on the VAX.

Thanks,

Rick

I have seen (and participated in) some of the Charles River demos that
highlight their Oracle db acelerator product on VAX/VMS systems at
various trade shows/events. Their product shows substantial response
improvements over standard Oracle reponse times. How it might improve
an actual application is probably dependent on each implementation.

Mark,

Thanks for your reply. I have also heard of them but not much more is known
about them than what you said in -.1.

My customer says that they are looking at a PC based acclerator from Charles
River. The customer says that the ORACLE tools will still run on the VAX but,
the database (reads/updates) will run on a PC. (How this is handled I have no
idea!!)

It is supposedly priced at $100,000 to solve my customer's concerns. Those
concerns being price related. They get killed by the ORACLE pricing whenever
they upgrade the VAXen. The customer sees CRA as a why to avoid that price
increase when the upgrade at a later date.

So, has anyone heard anything more specific about how CRA does this and
what some knockoffs might be?
